1960s
From the early records of pleasing, stacked vocal harmonies and upbeat tempos to the experimental sounds of psychedelia and counter-cultural messages, these classics helped define a generation and laid the foundations for all the music to come.
1970s
The sound of Rock in the 70s expanded greatly as hard rock, heavy metal, punk, and prog rock blended with the more familiar sounds strongly indebted to the blues and folk explosions of earlier times. These iconic records capture the sounds of an era when the music broke down walls and continuously evolved.
1980s
The 80s saw Rock continuing to evolve, embracing synthesizers, drum machines, ripping guitar solos, and huge hair as well as experimentation with music styles from around the world.
1990s
The sound of Rock was largely reactionary in the early 90s, pushing back against the excess of the 80s with the more raw and unpolished sounds of grunge. As the decade continued genre-blurring acts with diverse influences took center-stage along with an explosion of groups in the UK that were looking back to bygone eras.
2000s
The 2000s exploded with bands looking back at the garage rock and post-punk sounds of generations past and saw massive genre-expansion as streaming took hold and listener’s heard more and more types of music leading to the rise of pop-punk, emo, and indie rock and new era of electronic experimentation.
2010s And Beyond
Rock music now holds so many sub-genres and groups that blur the lines between genre altogether that the sound of Rock grows harder and harder to pin down. As many elder groups explore new sounds and instrumentation, crops of younger bands continue to mine the sounds of yesterday with novel new twists and turns.
