Notes

Maggot Brain is the third studio album by the American funk band Funkadelic. It was recorded at United Sound Systems in Detroit during late 1970 and early 1971, before being released in July 1971 by Westbound Records. Shortly after Maggot Brain was recorded, Tawl Ross, Eddie Hazel, Billy Nelson, and Tiki Fulwood left the band for various reasons.

Despite the "remastered from new hi-res analogue transfers," this one sounds inferior, to my ears, to the '89 "digitally remastered from the original analogue tapes" release, https://www.discogs.sitioby.com/release/602546-Funkadelic-Maggot-Brain. Not sure just why--some have complained about a lack of low-end on this one, but to me it just has that flat, "uninvolving" quality that some digitally remastered releases have (the notes don't say HOW it was remastered, but I'm guessing that those "analogue transfers" are digital ones).
As for the bonus 12"--this, too, is inferior to what could have been. The remix is, honestly, in one ear and out the other, and the live take, while nice to hear, appears to come from the legendarily bad '71 performance from Rochester, which can be found here for those interested https://www.discogs.sitioby.com/release/1104334-Funkadelic-Finest. That 45rpm single-sided version of the title track on that bonus 12" really is the one to hear, and the original version with full band is also worthy of a listen. I haven't compared the live take from that release with this one, but overall it's another case of a missed opportunity.

this 1975 reissue sound just as good as the original 1971 pressing. sharp clarity and a huge soundstage with some serious low end thump.

this actually sounds pretty good for what it is. it doesnt have nearly the low end depth of the US pressings from 1971 or 1975, but it still sounds pretty good and will save you hundreds of dollars in comparison. i did just give away my copy of this pressing to a co-worker of mine, but i had bought my copy brand new about 15 years ago from an online shop specializing in deleted/discounted/dead stock 'modern' pressings . right out of the sleeve, it had a trivial bit of surface noise from being slid out of the static-clingey paper inner, but it sounded pretty good regardless.

This is just one of those records where the original really does sounds so much better than the the repress. I rarely find it to be the case, but it is undeniable here.... I have owned several repress versions and none compare to this original version. The difference is immediately apparent - even to my untrained ears. The soundstage is sprawling - there is greater contrast between highs and lows, Eddie's soloing is more detailed and and I am hearing sounds I didn't hear on other versions or cd. Love it!

Very good sounding pressing. Bass lacking on a few tracks and the drums on Super Stupid are a bit too loud. The rest of the record sounds very clear and spacious. Get a VG+ one if you can!
