Not terrible, but not the greatest pressing either. Newly sealed, but took a thorough cleaning to get all the paper bits off from the cheap inner sleeve
-
this reissue has the funk of 40,000 years on it because it's from 4 men with beards, but i agree this more or less sounds fine. if it wasn't from 4MWB, nobody would have a problem with it.

My copy of this pressing had the side one stamper out of alignment, so the stylus travels an elliptical track that is audibly out of tune. Unlistenable. Thanks Ernie B's Reggae (RIP), who refunded my money.

Seems based on the most recent 50th anniversary release reviews.....This version is top of the heap! I still think this one sounds pretty good to very good. Sure a nice clean well mastered maybe even a remixed version from the original master tapes (not some digital copy) would be great, not sure that will happen in the next 5 years.

I've had some really bad 4 Men with Beards pressings, this is a surprisingly good one. Packaged in a well printed sturdy tip on gatefold jacket. If this listing is correct and this was pressed at Rainbo (a notoriously bad plant), they put care into this release, mine is thick, flat and free of any surface noise. I was not expecting to be impressed by this release, but I am.

My personal experience dictates that this LP is not as bad as its rep would have you believe. It does have a some moments of surface noise, and one or two odd sound artifacts that aren't surface noise. However, I think it sounds good overall. Note that I do not have other copies to compare.
Also, the gatefold cover is a tip on with thick cardboard. Very nice. If you can find this for $20-25 I'd say go for it.
Equipment used:
* Rega Planar 6 w/NEO PSU
* Rega Exact cartridge
* Rega Elex-R
* Dali Oberon 5
* Blue Jeans Cables + interconnects -
Edited 4 years agoThe tape hiss is incredibly distracting. It ruins the quiet moments. And there are noises that sound like someone cut the tape and put the, together poorly. Shame.
If you can get past the tape hiss, the depth on the bass is pretty good. And the separation is notable.
Feels like 4MWB “tried.” Good for them, I guess. -
Not the worst pressing I own, but also not the best. The actual source material seems to be pretty good, but it’s very clear that the audio was not fitted properly for vinyl. Tape static can be heard fairly clearly throughout. The pressing itself isn’t bad, very minimal to no noise is present, some small pops and clicks can be heard, but they really aren’t that distracting. A fair amount of rumble can be heard in low parts. The really loud mastering, although makes up for this pretty well. It’s a decent issue for the money that you pay, but an audiophile company needs to get a hold of this and do a PROPER issue.
Also, what an obnoxious name for a label, “4 Men With Beards”
