Notes
The 2nd album by Hawkwind, released in the UK 8th October 1971. Recording began briefly at Air Studios [Master Of The Universe], then moved to Olympic Studios. The innovative sleeve design was by Barney Bubbles [Colin Fulcher]. An 8-page fly-out (unlaminated card) printed full-color on the front and black & white half-tone on reverse. When opened out, the die-cut sleeve forms a bird shape with outstretched wings - rather like a hawk. When folded, the die-cuts interlock at the front center, the shapes and print forming an 'X', per the initial character of the title. The folded form thus creates an open-top wallet for the disc.
Regarding the 'X', the "Optics/semantics" credit on this is probably quite profound in retrospect. The visual semantics of Michael Moorcock. However, despite the visual evidence of the title - designed by an artist of high regard and displayed in galleries as "X In Search Of Space" and also referred to as such in MOJO magazine's 2010 Book of The Year Award "Reasons To Be Cheerful" - the various issuers of this work have consistently titled it "In Search Of Space", for reasons so far unknown. There is even 'kerning controversy' that the title may be "Xin Search Of Space", but the Discogs' database simply opts for the inclusion of the fact that the 'X' exists in the title, until it doesn't.
The UK disc is in a UA imprinted liner, accompanied by a 24-page 'Hawkwind Log Book' (printed black & white) detailing the minutiae of the band's 'flight' through space & time. This was not present in subsequent issues, although the 1996 CD remaster reproduces both the Sleeve & Log. Initial copies of the log were on off-white 'newspaper quality' paper, later issues appear to be on a cleaner white with a blue tinge to the black print. There is a distinct difference in the two, the latter of better quality - issued with the paired A1/B2 pressings & thereafter.

There are certainly copies with the 1U/4U matrix and the ‘Product Of Liberty-United Artists’ label ring text, I have one in front of me here. EJ Day sleeve and log with (to my eyes) a greenish tinge. The rest of the label layout is similar to the copy here, but I assume it predates the 1977 pressing. As such it has been orphaned by the recent edit.

Really shocked on how nice this pressing sounds. Ive heard only awful things about Simply Vinyl, but this one is either an outlier or people are wrong. Heavy, great grove separation. Deep, and clear audio with great instrument separtion. Parts I thought were just noise were actually distinguishable.
Easy 10/10 -
Edited 7 months agomy copy has some surface noise on side 2, I didnt clean the record so hopefully that will help but I wonder if it's a problem for anybody else

Nice quiet and clear sound. The original fold layout isnt obviously present, neither is the booklet. Lyrics are on the poster.
I did A/B on original 1971 pressing and this, and the original seems to have slightly punchier bass/drums, though the difference was not that dramatic - no, this is not brickwalled, its just tiny bit flatter on bass. Otherwise its quite nice. -

My copy just arrived today sounds great - to note unlike recent Rough Trade vinyl edition of Space Ritual that this one isn't numbered /500. Hype sticker just says 'splatter edition'. Just sayin'.

Hy there my italian press is not present on the discogs database. It came with the original UK foldout gimmick cover with a white sticker with UASL 29202 covering UAG 29202. The label, instead reports UASL 29202 instead of UAS 29202. The matrix number reports the date 28/4/72 on side 1 and 2/5/72 on side 2. Don't know if never came out with the Log Book, mine hasn't it.

Edited one year agoThe record sounds great! It's actually pretty heavy(140-150g) too. It's crazy because most UK pressings I have are super thin. I can't imagine it sounding better than this tho! I got 6 years ago along with their first and next album after this. It came with the booklet and Doremi came with the rat star poster! It was 26 British Pounds and I'm so glad I got them all bundled since everything was in ex condition. All the original lps sound great but I've never listened to any other pressing so there might be a better one out there.

GEEEEEEZUS guys! Can anyone PLEASE comment on the F***'n SOUND quality! 20 F'n comments on the label and not one bloody comment on how the damn thing sounds. How about it...?
-
It's a design feature, X is a universal point of origin, that's why it's included, it has nothing to do with the title dummy. If the title on the spine and label were incorrect, the band would have had plenty of time over 50 years of reissues to correct it.
