Notes
This is Frank Sinatra's third Capitol studio album. It has been widely considered as the first concept album. Its themes touch on the subjects of loneliness and unrequited love. Despite Capitol Records' hesitance of releasing an album with such "dark" themes, it proved to be a commercial success. The album is also viewed as a personal record for Sinatra because of his troubled relationship with his wife at the time, actress Ava Gardner.
Sinatra's album is also significant for being released as a 12" album. (Although it was first released in two-volume sets; as a 10" LP set with one 10" LP in each volume as well as a 45 rpm EP set with two EPs in each volume. The 12"s came soon after.) This made the album one of the first pop records to be issued as a 12". The reason for this was because Sinatra wanted his music to be taken more seriously and seen more as a collection of songs instead of just catchy individual songs put together. Before this, classical music was usually the only music to be released in the 12" format.
The album has been included in many greatest album lists over the years, ranking 282nd in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (2020 edition). Many music critics highly regard the album as one of Sinatra's greatest efforts. Musicians have also said the album is a favorite of theirs, such as Tom Waits, Marvin Gaye, and B.B. King.

Opened this today. Sounded nice enough but track 1 on side B had a defect that stopped the needle from advancing. Fail.

I have an OG of this, granted it is obviously not in perfect condition.. this pressing is phenomenal! I have nearly every Sinatra reissue from 2014-15 and can tell you they are all amazing! The audio quality blows me away and I have yet to have a dud from the series. On average, I have spent $15 to $20 on each one. I couldn't recommend these pressings more.
Musically, what more can be said about this album that has not already been said? It practically invented the modern idea of an album as a continuous piece of music as art. Without this album, music history would be drastically different than it is today. This album opened the door for everything that has come since.. the theme, the album art, the artist being able to choose what music they make and their own personal aesthetic. It all started here in what Sinatra was doing between late 1953 and through 1956. Or, even as far as into the '60s. Sinatra had so many peaks in that era but none greater than this 1955 release! -
I’m going to write this review, and then delete from my collection. Why? Because this particular copy that I own while being OG it in fair condition. It doesn’t skip but there are so many clicks and pops that it makes it unlistenable. I just listed it on eBay as a ‘representative copy’. I don’t want my Discogs values to be overrated which it is currently. I have the 1959 reissue copy in VG+ so I’ll keep that one.

I don't know if I'm just unlucky, but EVERY copy I've tried of this (about five now, even mint ones) have a lot of surface noise on the title track, and cleaning doesn't fix it. Anyone else experienced this?

Edited 2 months agoThis is an exceptional pressing. Definitely a more difficult pressing to find. I have only seen a couple for sale on here and I ended up getting my hands on one for around 20 USD in a strong VG++ condition straight from Japan. I haven't seen any eBay listings on this pressing but if you end up seeing one for sale in good enough shape I wouldn't recommend paying over 25 USD for one as you can probably find them cheaper. My copy has the occasional pops but I haven't given it a deep cleaning yet, but even with the pops, the quality of the sound is amazing.

Found a sealed copy in a charity shop for $3.00. Flat , clean and sounds good enough for casual listening.

The price for this is becoming completely ridiculous. Shouldn’t have let mine go ina collection sale! Got it for $10 🤷♂️🤦♂️

Talk about a Mood. If you ever had a doubt why Frank is The Chairman of The Board, you need to sink into this album. These are 3 in the morning songs. The girlfriend broke up with you, the wife is sleeping in the spare bedroom songs. The pressing is amazing, 70 years in. Love it! -
This is a 1956 Scranton pressing, the cover is in nice shape but the record is on the rough side, with a fair bit of crackle throughout. "Glad To Be Unhappy" and "I Get Along Without You Very Well" are marred by a feeler that causes multiple jump skips. Side two plays slightly cleaner, but tracks 1, 3, 4 and 5 each have a single skip. Despite the wear and tear, this pressing is irable, the sparse arrangements have a haunting beauty and Sinatra's vocals shine through the surface noise like a beacon on a foggy night.

Very good pressing, low noise and good mastering. Amazingly good sound for a recording from 1955. Comes in a poly innersleeve. Nice gatefold. This record leaves nothing to be desired. The version of this Sinatra classic is highly recommended.
