John Lennon & Yoko Ono – Double Fantasy

50% is Great Lennon...always takes me back to his last day at The Dakota when he was murdered...

Astonishing pressing. Dead quiet vinyl, tight booming bass, amazing dynamics and stereo separation. The only other copy I have to compare this to is the Nautilus Supercut but this Japanese first pressing blows it out of the water.

The Nautilus sounds decent but has some sibilance and isn't as punchy as the Japanese first pressing which is one of my reference albums for audio quality.

I bought the later Capitol reissue recently, which carries the same "CDD pre-mastering by WCI..." credit but has been amplified and had compression added. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Capitol and their labels seem to have been early adopters of the "louder is better" idea. Impossible to get a version of Autoamerican with full dynamics on "Rapture" for example. Same goes for some Pat Benatar stuff. Not that they sound bad, but I like to have dynamic, volume adjustable discs to work with for personal compilaton mastering and when a track has been maximized and compressed the only way to lower the volume is by chopping the waveform down, adding yet another type of compression. But I digress...

Got this Geffen version today and the disc sounds wonderful with an average DR of 14. The Capitol version still averages 13 but some tracks are pushing the limits. I actually wanted quieter versions of 'Woman' and 'Watching The Wheels' for my ongoing collection of 1981 hits since 'The John Lennon Collection' also exhibits this compressed sound.

I'm just here to say the George Marino sound is top notch, as you'd expect. The songs? Well, half of them are exemplary, as you'd also expect.

I need this. I need this so bad. Oh my god.

Listening to this album for the first time in years, I'm struck by how much I enjoy Yoko Ono's songs, particularly "Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him". No issues with this pressing, it sounds crisp and punchy, with good levels from top to bottom. My copy plays with light surface noise at the beginning of each side, and a skip in the opening seconds of "Watching The Wheels".

Another possible variant? The one I have is GHS-1-2001-JW2 #1 sᴛᴇʀʟɪɴɢ 0, Everything else matches

The John Lennon songs are great and the Yoko songs are not. You can often find clean copies in the dollar bin.
Sound quality of this pressing is good.
