« Fifth » or « 5 » is the first Soft Machine album recorded after the departure of their original drummer John Marshall, who immediately after one week of rehearsal with the group, started the recording of the rest of the album in Feb. 1972.
The album comprises 7 tracks, although first pressings of the LP in Europe omit to list the last track of side B (Elton Dean’s theme « Bone ») on sleeve and on disc label, whereas the American versions show the full tracklist. This mistake in European LPs was later corrected on subsequent repress and issues.

Pretty "out there" jazz fusion, though enjoyable from track to track even without specific knowledge of the genre. Just a good, listenable record, devoid of pretension.
