A mark changed as the lead guitar suddenly comes along and crash the party. It is maybe not so surprising that The Soft Machine stopped naming their albums by numbers, to underline that transition.

Edited 6 months agoWell, i partially agree that this pressing lacks some treble spark but i think is more of a laid back presentation, everything else plays smooth with plenty of low notes and good imaging... But when you compare to the Esoteric CD reissue, this one shows that the original LP mastering should have been better. As they did later in Softs wich is greatly mastered by Harry T Moss in Abbey Road.

Anybody else's copy of this sound pretty awful? The opener sounds really muffled and lacking in fidelity. Even cranking the treble on my mixer seems to do nothing the improve the situation.

The increasing influence of Karl Jenkins is evident as Soft Machine really do 'soften' into riff driven MOR jazz-rock territory.
Personally I prefer the earlier more edgy and unpredictable albums where the compositions were more substantial. -
A rather transitional album for Soft Machine. A tad less experimental more straight ahead groove oriented less detached from the avant fringe of which this band sought its early inspiration from. A word to note this is worth owning simply because we have a brilliant youth guitarist known as Allan Holdsworth working his early wizard like incantations on the six string electric and acoustic guitars so you still have the impeccable musicianship the Soft's where known for with the addition of a young six string genius adding his touches.
The things is Holdsworth is still working towards that signature sound we all know him for. Theres still plenty of dynamic compositions and if you like Rhodes theres plenty of it on this release not to mention sime burning synth solos!
Bundles is anything but watered down UK progressive jazz just another fresh chapter for the band in their golden era. No Soft Machine fan should this one buy but then again I am a bit biased and honestly believe these guys deserved more press coverage than they received!
