Notes
Recorded June 26, 1957 at Reeves Sound Studio, New York City. Stereo version was recorded with a separate, somewhat distant microphone setup, hence extremely different sonics and indistinct bass.
Stereo releases from 1958 through 1966 may list "Crepescule with Nellie" on label and/or cover, but it is only included on mono releases in that time span. There is no stereo version of that performance due to a tape deck malfunction.

Um som super gostoso de ouvir, sem perder a qualidade e o virtuosismo do jazz da mais alta qualidade. Um disco para ouvir e reouvir. -
Very nice sounding cut but it's approximately 1.8% slow.
I adjusted my Technics pitch and it sounds fantastic.

The pressing is of good quality and the playback is free of defects. The label on Side A is off center but the pressing itself isn't. The jacket is thick and the disc comes in a high quality poly inner sleeve.
As for the music, it sounds nearly identical to the 2001 mono CD remaster, which is my baseline for this album. It's hard to tell, but I think the bass might be further back in the mix here than on the CD, which annoys me a little bit. I was hoping for a bit more musicality and warmth from this vinyl release, but I can't hear many discernible differences between the two. It's good, but if I have opportunity to get a different pressing, I will.

This is the 1962 pressing without it's obi, obviously, yeah -
God damn this sounds incredible. I always forget Trane and Art are in the band. A truly brilliant classic.

Gets three stars because it's great music on a well pressed record:
Properly centered and flat record with low surface noise.
Soundstage is decent and mid frequencies are clear.
But it severely lacks bass on certain tracks, so either the mastering or recording isn't done correctly on those tracks.

Quality tested using an AT-ART9XI cartridge on a Technics SL-1200G turntable with SME V tonearm. -
Edited 6 months agoExcellent reissue. I have zero interest in comparing it to the AP or the ERC snake oil - this is a fantastic copy that the average jazz listener will get a lifetime of enjoyment from. Let the the audiofools argue about what is the best version - just get this and be happy.
Sounds great and no manufacturing defects.
Plus…….its Monk! -

Edited 6 months agoFor me, this AP 2024 version from KPG wins the shootout with his OJC 2024. The AP has much more presence and dynamic clarity; instruments feel solid, whereas on the OJC everything is slightly ethereal and lacking weight in comparison. The AP also has better 3D with more air around and between the instruments. The sleeve quality and artwork also superior here.
