Edited 2 years agoOk pressing. It's not that the level is a bit low (that was to be expected given the length of the album and that it's only 1 LP), because surface noise is low and so it can be cranked a bit higher on the amp without adverse effects. But it's also a rather flat mixing and mastering, not much more dynamic than the CD version, a bit thin compared to the great bass extension of previous New Order releases. Again, not a fault of this rather good pressing: it simply would require some thorough remastering of the original recording.

My copy without code and sticker. Record sounds better than original 2001 CD, for sure. As for dynamics, I guess you can't get much better mastering with that kind of production and mixing. Vinyl came quite clean, although in paper sleeve. Low volume, but I don't see that as a big problem.
-
Flat, clean, no surface noise, this version sound gorgeous and blow away my first CD version. It’s my simple opinion.
-
Very compressed and flat sound for sure. Used to have a copy on cassette tape that sounded times better than this but at least my copy is relatively quiet in of surface noise and has no noise. Until someone does this as double LP release you probably could skip this one or learn to live with the mediocre sound quality.

Edited 2 years agoComments:
Low Volume: TRUE. I had to set 63dB on my phonostage. I am usually at the low-50's.
Muddy: MOSTLY TRUE. I've heard worse, but I've heard a lot better - like all my original New Order pressings: Low-Life, Brotherhood, Substance.
Is it quiet, or is there a lot of noise?: There's A LOT of noise on the vinyl. There will always be some sound - we are dragging a stylus across a piece of vinyl, after all - but this pressing's is excessive.
Mastering: MEDIOCRE. Seems congested. Not sure if that's a product of what the engineer had to work with, or if it was by design. I had hoped for better.
Truly a mystery as to why the volume is low, though. I mean, WTH? How hard can it be to dial up the volume to an appropriate level?
The music itself is pleasant. Not NO's best, obviously, but worthy to add to a collection for fans.
[EDIT]: I'll need to check the play time on each side. If they tried to shove more than 20 or so minutes on a side, that could explain the low volume levels, compression, etc. -

Not impressed with the pressing and mastering. It doesn't sound directly bad, but there's a lot of background noise and the sound is low and a bit muddy. Still it's a great album and I'm glad to own it on vinyl - I just wish they'd made 2 LP version.
