Notes
1988-90 pressing of Capitol’s series of their earlier UK album catalog, first issued in 1987 for the first time in the US (outside the Mo-Fi limited editions), matching their CD counterparts (and using the same catalog numbers). Digital masters were used in these pressings.
There are 3 variations to this series.
This listing is for variation #2:
-Catalog # of CLJ-46435 (seen on spine, upper left front cover, lower left back cover and labels)
-Purple Capitol label design with the Parlophone logo on the left side of label above the “1” and “2”.
-Capitol oval and EMI rectangle logos along the bottom back
-UPC on the back is square in shape
Most copies came with a 2” round red sticker stating “DIGITALLY REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL BRITISH CATALOG” with the album title, cat # and Printed in U.S.A. (see photo)
Pressed at Allied Record Co as identified by what looks like a large Q (but is really a lower case "a" with a tail, Allied's logo) in the run out.
Disc comes in a clear rice-paper sleeve.

I have a UK Mono 3rd pressing 1963 and although this is not to that level it is very punchy and fairly clean sounding. A very good pressing and like to cost a 1/3 or 1/4 of an early UK mono. Digital yes but Wally did a great job with this one.

Edited 2 years agoReally lovely mono pressing of Please Please Me; surprising given that it's based off of the same masters that were used for the 1987 CDs that have some problems (with Please Please Me actually being the least bad CD out of the ones in mono). You can tell that Wally Traugott (the mastering engineer for these releases) took a lot of time and care to adapt the digital masters to records. Paul's bass really booms in the recording, and everything sounds clear. In fact, punchier than the 1987 CDs.
I am honestly surprised with how much hate and vitriol this record gets because I actually feel that some tracks sound better than the much-praised 2014 mono re-release of this album. If you take a listen, Do You Want To Know A Secret? and Chains has better equalization and is much clearer than the 2014 version, with that version sounding slightly more dull and less exciting. However, some tracks off the 2014 reissue do indeed sound better than this 1988 release, with Please Please Me (the title track) sounding more generations off.
Then again, this is coming from someone who has not listened to the other digital, mono reissues of the Beatles discography. Both are good versions of the album. And, definitely, if your budget falls more in line with getting these digital reissues, you should be pretty happy.
EDIT:
After debating whether or not to purchase from the same line of mono reissues from 1988, I got A Hard Day's Night, and they sound just as great as this reissue for Please Please Me. It's more of the same, where there are some songs that sound better than the 2014 mono reissues, and vice versa. But as stated before, you should be happy with either. -
Picked this up on a whim because it was the only decently priced mono mix I could find of this record....
For "digitally sourced" late 80s/early 90s Beatles stuff goes... this one is pretty good.
