Edited one year agoOut of all the Dutch labels that flirted with happy hardcore, I think BZRK might be the one that did it best. Some of which is thanks to the producer of this EP, Jorn Hanneman (aka Dr Phil Omanski & one half of Public Domain).
"The Flow" on the A side is a fairly simple tune, with a big stabby riff and the classic MC Duke sample (best known from "Baptized With Dub"), It's alright, if maybe a little generic. The Buzz Fuzz remix is a bit harder, with some nice housey stabs in the second half.
However the B side is a different story. "Maximum Respect" begins with a simple happy arpeggio, that builds up nicely into a bouncy monster packed full of rave stabs, and a distinctive ragga vocal sample. Then we have "We're Giving You Hardcore", which builds from an unassuming bassline into some more hoovers, but with another legendary rave stab section in the second break.
I don't think the B sides got as much play sadly, although I have seen a video of Darkraver playing "Maximum Respect" at a Nightmare In Rotterdam. But both tunes are great examples of why BZRK was so great - happy tunes with a UK influence & strong original melodies (instead of bait pop samples). "Maximum Respect" in particular will always be one of my absolute favourites.
