Bodylotion – Bodylotion IV

I'm not really a fan of the two most famous tracks on this EP. A1 has a bit of an unpleasant feel, both for the homophobia and the anti-happy hardcore sentiment :D (Also - anything they were dodging by saying "hobos" is somewhat undermined by rhyming "maggot" with "faggot" shortly afterwards!). And the vocals on "Always Hardcore" are horrific - although playing it to a friend of mine who loved Pearl Jam and hated hardcore was a real treat :D

But that's all irrelevant - because the real hit here is "Rip The Wheels". It starts out with some nicely chopped scratching, and a pitched up rap sample (which it turns out is Will Smith of all people!) - leading into some classic oldskool Neophyte hoover madness, complete with that trademark clean-but-heavy kickdrum. But midway through this switches up into what sounds like a different tune, with a frantic electro-ish synth and a very different kick - distorted but punchy. This bounces along for a bit with the samples from the intro, before switching back to the Neophyte hoovers for the rest of the tune. As with a lot of these tunes, the description doesn't do that justice - but this would be in my all time top 10 of old Dutch hardcore, no question.

"Make You Dance (Remix)" is worth a shout too - basically rearranging the original with a tougher kick and a monster of a speed-up breakdown in the middle, giving it bags more energy. The other two tracks are alright if nothing special (ironically in the case of B3).

But really "Rip The Wheels" is all you need - best thing Neophyte ever did!

The great thing about the naming of 'Happy Is Voor Hobo's' is that 'Hobo' is Dutch for 'Oboe', which is a wind instrument, and 'Fagot' is Dutch for 'Bassoon', which is also a wind instrument. So all "offensive" phrases featured in the track can be seen as harmless, although everybody knows the actual intention... :)

Bodylotion explicitly mentions Homo's for A1 is Hobo's when they appear live. They really say Homo's and not Hobo's. They claimed the use of Homo's wasn't allowed but in fact they did this to prevent a lawsuit of any kind. Purely for and on the record. Like a lot of stuff from Neophyte they like to stir things up but this 'B thing' must have intentially been done to try keep things calm. It didn't resist us from singing the song in Amsterdam city after a Hellraiser party in 1996 when we struck upon a pink feathered gay. Actually the track was created to make a stance against the Happy Hardcore and not specificly against gay people. Still a bit contradictive considering they created a happy hardcore mix of "Always Hardcore" a few months later..

Happy is voor hobo's was meant to be: Happy is voor homo's (gays)... But it turned out that it could not be released that way, so they changed the name. In the following live appearances Neophyte himself stresses the B in hobo's for fun, knowing that the crowd is shouting: hoMo's!
Neophyte always knows to do something original with new tracks!
