Edited 4 years agoFrom http://music.hyperreal.org/library/publicity/plastikman/sheet_one_arrest:
"Plastikman's Sheet One
A Case of Mistaken Identity
New York, NY -- On Monday, July 27, a 20 year old in Rockwall, Texas
(just outside Dallas) on his way to visit his girlfriend in the next
town was pulled over by the police for speeding. He was asked to step
outside the car so the police could search it.
Inside the car, the police found was NovaMute Records' Plastikman Sheet
One CD. Apparently believeing that the perforated artwork of the CD
booklet might contain "controlled substances", the young man was arrested
and booked on suspicion of "possession of a controlled substance." This
charge is considered a 2nd degree felony/schedule 1, that means the
punishment can be 2-20 years with up to a $10,000 fine.
The young man's father called Mute Records New York office for help in
trying to convince the police the CD booklet was artwork. Mute Records
couriered a sealed shrink-wrapped CD to the father to show to the police.
The young man spent 5 1/2 days in jail and was released this past weekend
on $5500 bail, and a trial date has now been set for August 23rd. Currently
the polic are testing the CD booklet in a lab. Results will not be ready
for three weeks.
PLASTIKMAN is Richie Hawtin, one of the most revered figures in the global
techno underground. He is the founder of +8 Records and the man behind
F.U.S.E. and Circuit Breaker. Richie Hawtin is also known as one of the
world's top DJs for his trance, ambient techno music. PLASTIKMAN's
Sheet One is a trip through the highlights of the electronic underground.
Mind music for the post-acid generation.
At press time, it is unclear whether NovaMute Records will include this
artwork in future PLASTIKMAN Sheet One CDs."
From https://www.wired.com/1994/11/just-say-no-to-techno/:
"According to Hawtin, the whole Plastikman album was "written as an analogy of a trip, either a journey or an acid trip. It is very repetitive and builds in intensity, reaches a high point and then comes down." The artwork was part of the concept and is chemically inert. Says Hawtin of the arrest, "I don't think anyone thought something like this could happen."" -
as a young man living in glasgow i had this on tape and around midnight i would set out on my cruise around kelvingrove park but would never focus on what was before me until side 4 which is the weakest. listening now what really strikes me is the use of what we now call field recordings (or if less generous then hiss) to give a sense of space around the acid lines and drums. this record will always mean a lot to me not least for all the cock i got once side 4 started

Edited 7 years agoBetter be careful when driving & havin' this in your car: "The cover was so realistic that a man in Texas was arrested when a police officer saw the CD on his car seat after pulling him over on a traffic violation."

Edited 19 years agoPlasticity is the track that carries the album. Other tracks are very similar and are also formulaic. It is very trackhead style music that only composers can understand. The 808 kick tends to require high quality speakers, so turning up the volume is a solution for sub-woofer owners.
