It kills me to say this, as this is an all-timer for me, but this is almost unlistenable on vinyl with a good pair of cans. The mix is so hot and compressed due to the digital nature of the recording process, it just sounds wrong. Grating, even.

Edited one year agoAppreciate if someone with the VMP 2xlp version compare it to this OG pressing? Thanks.

It's crazy (but also kinda funny) to see how many folks have finally discovered the Chameleons. For 20 years all I've heard is Joy Division this Joy Division that (despite Interpol sounding nothing like them) but around this time last year finally everyone seems to be talking about The Chameleons in relation to Interpol. Better late than never I suppose!

I found this first pressing at my local record store in VG+/VG+ condition, sounds absolutely killer, the production really shines through. It sounds like they recorded it in a cathedral or something (I know they didn't, but sounds like it here)..

Edited 3 years agoGentlepersons, PLEASE quit all your whining re. what you hear. Oh, and I’d like to hear what someone who saw this tour live - as I did - sharing something gosh darn interesting. That said, I’m also interested in content and quality of music. Interpol - like The Strokes alongside them - released an amazing, extraordinary and while highly derivative debut LP. In both cases their 1st live tours ing each band’s LP was equally amazing. Interpol played well, TOTBL. Sounded to me very much like the original pressing. Cooler th
an ice, dead eyed their music has been stinker after stinker ever, no? The Strokes? Live on that 1st tour played to the crowd in a different more accessible way. 1 LP’s worth of music seemed to make him and Hammond nervously interested in reaction from audience. Totally different than Interpol yet exactly the same dead - they’ve not released anything worth an long=player collection. Man, I’m rooting for them. the 2nd/3rd releases I was there release day right, but those and subsequent releases sounded - not the pressing but music - like they were making fun of themselves but didn’t quite get the joke.
The Interpol release sounds like Interpol. I love my Strokes import w/ proper b+w glove artwork which sounds like The Strokes. Tough year no live music really but some great releases on great wax. Thurston Moore’s newest on "audiophile grade" black (my favorite color) vinyl. I guess I’m saying that threads w/out color only "this LP should…/…is not…/…don’t buy b/c I think…" remind me of the lister and collector I don’t want to be and only once in a while will present either 1) factual info relevant to LP not known or 2) a comment on the release and maybe a short story alongside. Trusting the ears and the assessment of compression amount with no baseline/sample size mentioned is silly. we aren’t physiologically able to hear the difference b/t analog and digital. I still think I can esp. on a Pavement, Smiths, Strokes (insert your favorite ________). I love discogs for various reasons and so do you I’m guessing. Where - when I read reviews and "ahem" comments - is the gosh darn soul? Thx. Go to a show, swing by the merch table and off you go right? Cool.

Will somebody finally just do a 2xLP cut of this from the analog tapes (if there are any?) and give this record the proper high quality pressing it deserves?? With 50 minutes of music going on, on this record, and a lot going on dynamically, these tracks need the proper room to breathe and show dynamics instead of just being crammed onto a single LP and compressed! The drums seem to sadly sound flat on no matter what pressing you get, even the 180gram. Come on..Lookin' at you Matador Records...give us the pressing this masterpiece truly deserves!

It is a pity all the reissues seems to sound crappy. The original pressing while not completely quiet sounds damn great
