This press is a good one. Minimal background noise and the mastering is quite dynamic. Loran's Dance is a masterpiece.

I bought an original pressing about a week ago. At $80 I think I may have overspent a little but I've listened to it about four times. The vinyl appeared flawless when I saw it at the store. When I got it home there were some mild noises in the background. BUT what I wonder the most is that the bass and louder parts of the music seem to distort a little. Does this happen on anyone else's copy?

Edited 4 years agothe beat is spot on, the tunes timeless and the personnel top notch but man Grover Washington Jr. truly steals the show on this one, imo. and let's not forget the last track "Loran's Dance", a classic on its own, it's also written by Washington. Creed Taylor could easily have chosen Grover to lead these sessions but i guess they went for Muhammad because... i guess rhythms are so tight on these tunes it's all so undeniably groovy. best breaks, best jamming, such a quality testament of 70s fusion, beautiful piece of music.

All I have to say about this release is that Idris is funky as funk. I mean Bob James and Mr. Idris working together? Nothing but pure cross over jazz and as far from traditional as you can get. Lock in the drums, bass and Rhodes and the party is knocking at your ear!

Production on the first track (a Hendrix cover) is not to my taste: it sounds somewhat too slick and commercial. Muhammad's drum work holds it together, and things improve when the stock brass arrangement gets out of the way and lets the soloists in.
The real standouts are the last 3 tracks, which serve up an irresistible '70s jazz-funk sound with minimal cheese. The musicians are tight, and players Grover Washington Jr and Randy Brecker went on to become stars in their own right.
"Loran's Dance" is a highlight, sampled by DJ Shadow, the Beastie Boys, and many more. -
Outstanding soul-fusion album featuring a cast of awesome LA session musicians. The best tracks are the last three. They really sound like the kind of music you hear in gritty 70s crime films. Great stuff.
