Edited 2 months agoOh jeez. Where to start? The original was far from an audiophile recording or experience. It's an album of a crazy LOUD band recorded live in 1968. It's like a Nonesuch Explorer record - a field recording. This version is great. It sounds like the original in all it's flawed trebly washy glory.
It takes 5 seconds to choose -
Another stellar release from Rhino. I just listened to this through a pair of cans and this baby kicks like a MotherF'er, I kid you not. Not only does it sound terrific, but it comes in a thick cardboard tip-on gatefold jacket just like back in 1969. Great stuff.!!

I would say this ranks as among the best sounding of the vinyl's I've heard, quiet and very full, rich sound.

Anyone else have distorted vocals in places? I realize this isn't the highest quality recording out there but digital versions seem smoother. Am I nuts?

Just purchased one of these with the identical hype sticker on the shrink. When I opened it the red/white/blue coloured vinyl was inside, must be my lucky day!

This version is uncensored and kicks like a mule. Rhino always does a good job. For those of us who cannot fork over The Big Bucks for an original, this is the one to get.
I have had this album on CD for many years and never understood what the "big deal" was with all the hype surrounding it. Tonight I listened to the vinyl reissue by Rhino and I officially "get it." The energy and power of this show explodes from the grooves like the sound of a big block 454 without a muffler cranking over on a quiet suburban street. The MC5 was on fire at The Grande Ballroom in their hometown of Detroit; you can practically feel their sweat fly off the stage and hit you in the face on this reissue.
If you are familiar with this album and want to know what it felt like to actually BE at the Grande Ballroom on October 30 & 31 of 1969, this is the closest you are going to get for under $20 (unless you were there, of course). To those who are not familiar with this album but are interested; get this vinyl reissue by Rhino, put it on a good turntable, put on some good headphones or turn it up REALLY loud through some quality speakers and that should do the trick. If that doesn't get your motor going you should probably check your pulse, or just go back to your trusty Now That's What I Call Music CDs
