Edited 20 years agoMost people are familiar with the A-side (it topped the charts in no less than 35 countries). What's of main interest here is the B-side, a non-album track called 'A Dozen Red Roses For My Darling'. Now as cheesey as it may sound (you're probably thinking of a corny ballad from a movie soundtrack, right?), this track is quite dark and menacing and perhaps one of the most atypical Queen records there is. Written by drummer Roger Taylor, it's a synth-dominated instrumental with a ferocious bass line, lots of flanging effects and stacks of percussion. It's very much of its time and can even be compared to New Order's then-current experiments in synth-pop (check their Brotherhood album). An interesting note is that an alternate version of this track featured in the movie Highlander, in the scene where Kurgan kindaps and holds Brenda hostage as he terrorises New York traffic. The track then segues into a rather chilling version of New York New York, sung by an obviously delighted Freddie
