Edited 2 years agoI became obsessed with Pat Metheny/Pat Metheny Group around the early 90's after a friend of mine tried to get me into his music. I started with Secret Story, which is a pretty good place to start in my opinion! I then trawled back through his back catalogue and bought most subsequent releases when they appeared on vinyl (which didn't happen very often, sadly). The Geffen years can be judged separate to the ECM years I think, but the transition from First Circle to Still Life was pretty seamless. Still Life is fantastic and for me the highlight is Third Wind. What a fantastic track, it has everything, magnificent guitar solo (although I could always take or leave the synth guitar), lovely gear change towards the end and Wertico's cymbal work is absolutely fantastic. And I miss Lyle Mays more and more as I hear him on these recordings. Metheny's best work was with him by his side, imo.

Edited 3 years agoStill Life was quite a hit in the Metheny Group catalog of release hot after the heels of the over the top cinematic jazz epic First Circle which to this day is a hard one to top and his last group album on ECM. SLT took the band south further into Brazilian music you can hear the bossa like rhythms compliments of Armando & Wertico , cool piano interplay, solid bass lines of Rodby, superbly melodic and tender guitar work(theres not much or any of Pat's famous Roland guitar synth on this one!). Some of Pats and Lyle's moth lushly orchestrated material thick with instrumentation well placed in the stereo field. From the forward chugging Last Train Home (a huge FM jazz hit) to the melancholy drenched ballad In Her World the album is fresh even in 2020 and not a single jazz group can top the efforts the group unleashed on the world in 1987. This is art for the ears and will stand as a testament to the creative spirit of the individuals involved.

This was my first Pat Metheny album I ever bought, and I was able to snag an unopened copy of this pressing from here. My God it just sounds amazing, and I still can't believe on how clean the thing sounds after being in shrinkwrap for almost 30 something years! Already have his newly released "From This Place", and I'll definitely be looking into buying more of his older stuff in the future!
Also gotta thank Hirohiko Araki for exposing me to some amazing music as of late! -
