Its april 2025 and The AP Doors 45rpms stand as follows:
LA Woman = Definitive/No equal
Strange Days = Definitive/No equal
Morrison Hotel = Definitive/No equal
Soft Parade = Definitive/No equal
Waiting for the Sun = Good but bettered
The Doors = What went wrong????
There is so much hyperbole online about the AP Doors reissues. I personally feel some is agreeable. Some is disagreeable. And some is downright moronic. Some of the wordage written about the eponymous debut on AP45 confuses me as ive tried two copies (to.make sure the first wasnt a dud/amazing looking counterfeit) and the SACD and concluded this is the dullest, most colourless, least expansive edition of this recording ive ever heard. The sound on the AP edition is akin to me getting the remote for my Oled TV, a set thats been meticulously calibrated to D65 and negative 3 delta error, going into the menu and turning the colour down by 50%, the contrast down by 50% and finally turning on the "eco mode" just to rub it in.
Yep... i feel this is worst sounding thing theyve ever put out. Something to do with a terrible low fi mix as the source im sure, but i would never have signed this one off.
Honestly.... the 2009 Bernie G 33rpm from Rhino is much richer sounding, alot more expansive front to back and side to side, actually has treble extension and even manages decent texture to the elements. Its everything the AP isnt.
Either that or my ears are completely ffffffffff.......

Is there any difference in sound or quality packaging between reissues 180 g editions and 200 g editions?

Wow. This pressing is incredible, right down to the cardboard used for the cover. The pressing itself sounds absolutely alive.

Edited one year agoThese 45 rpm Doors reissues by AP (based on the first album plus Strange Days, which I now have) sound amazing - just top notch - very tonally rich and dense, 'present,' and dynamic - examples of the best that analogue sound has to offer. Jim's voice, plus guitar, bass, and keyboards all sound amazing, as though just recently recorded. The only shortcoming to my ears has nothing to do with the reissues themselves, but with the limits of recording/production from that era- the drums typically sounding recessed, murky, and a bit underpowered to my ears. Maybe that's just the 'LA sound' from the late 60s.

AP or DCC: I do not know which version is better. Both sound fantastic, clear and transparent. Love it.

Is there a way to tell this pressing from the 2020 without opening it to see the insert? The dates on the back stop at 2012...

Edited one year agoI have an old OG press, I have the Rhino press and I have this pressing. THIS pressing wins Hands Down! Never mind the reviews saying “muddy” etc etc. if this doesn’t sound Stellar on your system, then you need to upgrade your system! Because this pressing sounds Fantastic on mine! For a less than perfect recording to begin with, this is as good as it gets!! And then some!
Update: I recently picked up a near mint copy of the DCC pressing. So this AP comes in a distant second to that Lol -
This is by no stretch, an audiophile recording. Is it the best you’re going to get - probably. Artwork is the stand-out feature of this release.
