I must be very lucky : not ONE noise, pop, crack, hiss or buzz on mine. Fantastic sounding copy - and possibly the quietest vinyl pressing I've heard.
Listening to this is a slightly unsettling experience though : the mastering gives it a much broader soundstage than I'm used to from other pressings, but each musicians occupies a slightly smaller, narrower space within that, so for all the stunning extra clarity, you get less of a sense of live cohesion. If you can score a clean copy though, the insight into the performances is amazing. -
Edited one month agoNOISY, as the 45rpm UHQR repress by Acoustic Sounds (that's worst than this one). And that's not the master tape as they say and write. Other older releases & reissues have not defects like this. AVOID

Edited 3 months agoI lost count how many copies of this album I purchased during my lifetime. But Analogue Production's UHQR pressing definitely tops them all. For the price it better have!
Before the scoring my copy of UHQR LP, the previous top contenders were Mobile Fidelity's (very good) and the Classic Records pressing (excellent!). I don't ever need to purchase another (unless they offer me a copy of the master tape. I know, there are modern reel-to-reel copies available, but its price prohibits a purchase. -
Edited 4 months agoIf you like UHQR but don't like the big box it comes in, then these are excellent choices too:

Analogue Productions hits it out of the park again. Enjoy this pressing very much especially since I don’t have to flip as often as the 45 rpm.

Startling realism, well balanced, deep soundstage, extremely nice packaging, and a perfect pressing. Stellar in every way.

Edited 6 months agoI'm still forming my thoughts about this pressing. It's definitely impressive. It boasts outrageous separation and detail, allowing the listener to really dissect what's going on musically, and the Clarity vinyl is remarkably quiet. It does feel to me (at least on the first couple of listens) like the emphasis on separation/stereo stage has led to a bit of "ungluing", though - I'm failing miserably at describing this, but the band feels less cohesive/like a unit than on other versions I've heard. Bill Evans is over here, Miles is over there, Cobb is in the corner, and so on. Again, this is in some ways pretty cool, as you can really pick apart what each player is doing, but it loses a bit of the smokey, ethereal vibe of the original to me. Just one person's opinion. I think they've certainly succeeded at what they set out to do, but I don't know if everyone wants to hear this album the way that Chad Kassem seems to want to hear it. I'd be really curious to hear how a mono cut overseen by AP would sound.

STUNNING
There is no other word needed for this reissue. My copy is dead flat, dead centered and but for one pop its impossible to hear theres a record in play with my AT microline. I washed before hand as clearly alot of static was built up in the sleeve/jacket and all new records warrant a clean before going near a stylus anyway.
Such a low noise floor allows Bernie G to shine in the mastering stakes.... rich, expansive and tonally entirely believable. Easily betters the MOV 33rpm issue i had. I have suprised myself by not going for the 45rpm edition but as the 33 is done so good i dont feel the need.
The way Coltrane explodes into action midway during Freddie Freeloader took me back and here my room is alive with glorious sound!
Honestly id fell out of love with this album. It is overplayed so much and usually in low quality that i forgot just how ESSENTIAL IT IS. This version has made me love it all over again.
I cant say fairer than that but i would love AP to do a Bernie G SACD to go with. -
Edited 8 months agoSave your money is my opinion. This is not only a bit noisy but I think it's rather aggressive sounding overall. They juiced it up in a bad way. I'll never buy another one of these UHQR pressings, it's a joke in my opinion. I would way rather have an OG pressing, I'm sure the sound is warm and loverly this is bright and aggressive. Some like that, so more power to you. I've never really understood why everyone loves this album so much, it's the top jazz album of all time. I'll take Miles more wild music all day over this. I try to listen with respect and reverence but I just don't hear it.

The only UHQR in my collection and easily one of the noisiest pressing in my collection. Mastering sounds amazing, but there are pops and clicks, and no cleaning can make it go away. When you pay 125€ for a record that is supposed to be of the highest sound quality, and that you find out it is not better than a 20€ pressing it is really dissapointing and upsetting. Never again will I buy any UHQR from analogue productions, they're good marketers but QRP is just a bad pressing plant in my opinion. Also it was difficult to get here in europe and no return was possible from the online store. I might just end up selling it, but with all the bad reviews I doubt anyone would pay half of the retail price. Don't get fooled by the marketing around these ultra releases, they're just over-hyped. Maybe a bad copy? For that price, you'd think the quality control doesn't let any default go through, again this is not the case. Shame on QRP, analogue productions and all the people involved in this deceiving release.
