Notes
Toshiba-EMI pressing (1984-1985). Initial pressings in 1983-1984 were by CBS/Sony and all explicitly state as much in the hub, either as "MANUFACTURED BY CBS / SONY RECORDS INC" or "CSR COMPACT DISC" x3.

Vertical Japanese text on right side of obi front (and hype sticker):

Probably common knowledge by now, but be careful when buying any copy with a 17A1 matrix, as there are fakes that have been circulating for several years now.
The easiest way to tell them apart is to check the font used in the matrix - the '7' on the fakes has a continuous diagonal stroke, unlike real copies where the '7' runs diagonally and then straight down.
Likewise, the 'A' on the fakes has continuous diagonal strokes on its sides, unlike the 'A' on legit copies that has diagonal and then straight sides, like a simple drawing of a house (check the images here for a closeup of a legit 17A1 copy).
Some also reportedly have SID (IFPI) codes.
I also found this on an audio forum:
A new '17A1' fake appeared in 2011 with a 17A1 matrix. Easily spotted with NO compact disc logo on the cover, and a barcode on the rear tray art plus numerous other issues. The disc has the 'Black Triangle' covering the hub to the hole.

Beats the pants off my 1987 CD for sure. Everything just sounds clearer on the Black Triangle CD when de-emphasized, too bad this particular release is unreasonably expensive for a casual fan like me

Edited one year agoIt sounds amazing when de-emphasized. One thing I learned is that this CD has the pre-emphasis flag in its subcode, not in the TOC. So software that claims it detects CDs with PE will probably not work. Just rip the CD, then apply de-emphasis manually. I use CDdeemph or the de-emphasis post-processing foobar component.

Edited 7 years ago1987 CD has bass cut off. Black Triangle has deeper bass. Very warm sounding. The best digital version of this album. Maybe the best ever considering limitation of vinyl format. Abbey Road is a nightmare for vinyl world to master it. First UK pressings are the way to go but if you want the right version (sonic wise) this is the right version. But on the other hand This is not the big improvement. It isn't worth its price.

Anytime I see an early, hard-to-find CD being trumpeted as the greatest ever on a particular forum of shut-ins I get leery. However, I do believe this one is the best of the lot for this title. Assuming that the pre-emphasis is handled properly. One might say it sounds fairly close to the 1987 CD but on further comparison, it doesn't have the high-end harshness.
It also doesn't have the wonky second side. (Apparently, the '87 CD used two vastly different sources for each of the sides.)
A nice analog-sounding CD and very good for the time period in which it was released. (I can't say the same for that forum-favorite, the 35 of Wings Greatest.)
