Edited 3 months agoSimply put I love the dark synthpop in Weeknd's "Nightmare Trilogy", and the bookend of "Hurry Up, Tomorrow" is (mostly) no different.
This part of the trilogy is primarily focused on legacy building. I enjoyed this simplified 1st pressing version more than the later expanded version because Weeknd runs into 50's "Massacre" problem - less is more.
I dislike the modern direction in comparison to "Dawn FM" taken on a track like "Timeless". "Sao Paulo" is a festival banger that surprisingly hits the mark. Lana Del Ray's outro on "The Abyss" is perfectly haunting and sample worthy.
I dislike "Give Me Mercy" - it's way too bright for "Hurry Up, Tomorrow".
I do enjoy the loose storytelling of The Weeknd speaking on how he temporarily messed up his voice on "Take Me Back To LA" and how that plays into the greater theme of "Hurry Up, Tomorrow" as The Weeknd waxes E. Howard's Conan and considers putting down his Barbarian ways to retire to the Throne he built off blood, sweat, and tears - expertly depicted by none other than Frank Miller on the variant cover.
