Great album and probably my favorite Lee Morgan Tone Poet! Musically there aren't a ton of major standouts, but it's a solid session. Zip Code might be the best - it's very reminiscent of the excellent Gary's Notebook from Sidewinder. Speaking of Sidewinder, there are no clones of that track here, which in my book is a huge plus. This one made a great TP pairing with Jackie's Demon Dance!

Purchased from Amazon UK & the vinyl was badly warped, (cartridge moving up & down like a roller coaster ride). For me this shows a lack of quality control at the manufacturing stage. (Not sure where this was pressed?) I thought this was meant to be a pressing? I will think twice before purchasing another Tone Poet release. Thankfully returns are simple with Amazon.

This thing is fire. Fantastic material and musicianship. And the pressing is damn near perfect. I don’t know where some of the negativity around this album is coming from. It’s done really, really well. A great recording.

Edited one year agoWonderful session! Great pressing with all the hallmarks of a Tone Poet. As far as the music, I was under the impression this session was less than stellar. Let me disabuse you of that notion if you have it. I bought unheard and listened to it two times in row before catching my breath. A 'honeymoon' period? Perhaps, but there is no denying this is a strong album. Of note is Higgins' drums which explode off the vinyl. A must for Lee Morgan fans, but I also recommend for jazz fans in general. Just a great record. HIGHLY recommended. (You can always test drive it on YouTube, too)

Edited one year agoI don’t know what people are talking about concerning this release.
I have a decent system that sure lets you know when a pressing or recording is bad. This one sounds as good as any of my other Tone Poet releases. It hasn’t even been cleaned yet. Maybe lucky, I got mine from Amazon in the Eastern part of Canada 🇨🇦. Maybe a different batch. -
As mediocre a Tone Poet as ive collected and ive got 90% of them. The scratch on side one thankfully doesnt impact playback which is quiet as a mouse and flat as can be. The music is good if not Lee's best but the recording is lacking warmth and depth. If im being honest it could be digital and lowish res at that. Not well recorded, not well mastered, lacking in bass. It makes you wonder why they went through all the effort then again alot of BN recordings are a million miles off being audiophile worthy!!

Nothing spectacular. Definitelly not best Lee Morgan and not the best TP sounding release. Collector's item to complete the series in my case.

Recorded sound is good. Piano sounds unusually good for Blue Note. Morgan is at his considerable best here. I got a reasonably quiet pressing, with a few light ticks on Side B and some very low-level surface noise briefly appearing on Side A. I certainly would not call it "silent" or "perfect", but it is very easy to enjoy listening to this album. Stunning color portrait of Lee Morgan on the front cover and great photos inside the gatefold, including a wonderful pic of Morgan and McLean, that dynamic duo, in action. Gorgeous package, as always with the Tone Poet series. Any Lee Morgan fan has probably already bought this, but, if not, don't sleep on this one!
-
For me the weakest sounding Tone Poet up to now (and I own all). Lacks full body of Reggies bass and is therefore on the bright sight!
