Edited 9 months agoI don't know... I just compared with my 1980 MCA, which is cut a bit hotter, 'more dynamic'. We ("audiophiles") talk about the Ludwig LZII being a 'hotter cut' and sounding best... why doesn't that same 'logic' apply to other recordings? I mean, it sounds great. Not trying to rain on the UHQR parade, just for 99% of listening situations, where you're actually enjoying the album, just doesn't seem like a big stretch. I'll still buy all the UHQR (just to have), but giving my real world review. I will it that generally there was a perceived articulation, especially in the guitar frequencies. Sometimes I felt like I was hearing certain ages as newly unheard mixes. But it boils down to a subjective response "hotter" vs. more articulate.

The big problem with the UHQR is that "Parker's Band" was cut at the wrong speed--it is a semitone too high. I urge anyone who owns this set to Acoustic Sounds and put a bug in their bonnet about getting the second disc cut properly. The current high-resolution digital releases are also at the incorrect speed--compare the track timings to those of all earlier digital versions and you'll see. For a set that costs $150, this error is egregious.

Edited one year agoI'm very happy with this press. No, it's not bright, which might sound like a loss of detail or lifeless, but this is not true. There is great depth, detail and warm lush analogue sound. Can distinctly hear all the instruments play out in the studio like I'm there. Due to the not-overly-bright sound, it temps the listener to crank it up, which I have no problem with ;) This press sounds more like a nice flat tape transfer than impressing with bright, excited mastering. Well done.

The BEST pressing to own is the white label promo or an original pressing. Beats all others including those overpriced uhqrs.
Here is one of several shootouts

I’ve played this today for the first time and to be honest I find it a lot better than Mr Fremer says it is for me the only tracks that don’t sound exquisite are side 1 Ricky and 2 Night by Night , they to me sound completely woolly and not as I my Probe and Original UK pressings sounding. Apart from that the sound seems to get
Improve as the album progresses/ Any Major Dude / Charlie Freak / With A Gun are all worth the entrance fee alone. I have all 4 thus far and would have appreciated if AS followed the discography in order so we can all enjoy the sonic improvements as the years progressed. My second favourite album far but then again I always have loved albums from CTE to The Royal Scam which seems months away sadly. -
Edited one year agoI do not get some reviews, this pressing is fantastic! It does require you to turn up the volume by quite a bit. But the record sounds smooth as butter and almost holographic at times. I like the fact that it doesn't sound too bright which makes it very pleasant to listen to at loud volume. Very balanced dynamics and wide soundstage.
I adore this edition and makes me appreciate this album even more than I already did. Now to be clear I do not own a US original and I'm sure that's an amazing pressing aswell.
Now the vinyl is not as silent as it promises to be at times but the sound definitely makes up for it.

Edited one year agoFinally it came in. Besides paying alot more than you US citizens we also have to wait longer.
Anyway,this sounds amazing imo.
Love the packaging. It's a real stand out in anyone's collection.
Bought Can't Buy A Thrill and Countdown To Ecstacy and will buy the 4 remaining ones.
The best has yet to come. -
Edited one year agoI'm very disappointed in this album. I knew buying it wasn't the best. Many YouTubers will tell you this, but I wanted to hear it myself, and also want the entire SD catalog on UHQR vinyl. Sound wise it's good but a lot of inner groove distortion. I've given it 3 baths in the ultrasonic cleaner and no difference. Unless you're like me and just wanting this on collector vinyl, I'd . The 2023 Amazon $22 pressing is sufficient.

Sounds great but 2nd disc is warped, as I'm in UK I can't get it replaced without a fee or 2nd order, hence the 3 stars.

Not very good at all. I wanted to have the entire Steely Dan UHQR series but I could not live with this one. I have a clean OG pressing and its more detailed, natural and open sounding. It really rocks! Also on the UHQR pressing there is something very wrong with Donald Fagen's vocals. My favorite track "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" just sounds lifeless and unnatural. I tiered to eq it but I could not get it to sound right. the whole thing is just really off and ear fatiguing after a wile. Such a shame. The good thing is, Acoustic Sounds let me return it for a full refund. I'm not sure what condition the masters were in but I really hope they do a much better job with "Aja" and "Gaucho" as the OG pressing of those are sonic masterpieces.
