The early 1970s were a significant time in the history of Jamaican music. The music of Ska, from the 1960s, had morphed first in the direction of Rock Steady, and then into Reggae. Standout stars at that time were Desmond Dekker & The Aces, Toots & The Maytals (both represented on this soundtrack), and the Wailers who, at the time of this film's release, were seeing founding Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer leaving the band for solo careers. That left Bob Marley and their stellar back-up band to further the Reggae music gospel. With the help of Johnny Nash's crossover smash "I Can See Clearly Now" (later covered by Jimmy Cliff for the movie "Cool Runnings"), and Brits like Paul McCartney (covering "Love Is Strange") and Eric Clapton (with his hit cover of the Wailers' "I Shot The Sheriff"), the movie The Harder They Come capitalised on Euro-American interest in this fresh music form. The soundtrack contains the title hit, performed by its star, Reggae great Jimmy Cliff, and several needle drop hits by him and other Reggae and Jamaican pop stars. This soundtrack, along with the mid-60s compilation "The Real Jamaica Ska", comprise a perfect primer for neophyte fans of the early years of this incredible genre.

As for the film, a country boy comes to the city to find fame and fortune as a singer, and gets into trouble. One of the most prolific of Jamaican-based and -produced movies, it makes stark commentaries on Jamaican society, music industry corruption, and the negative cultural/positive musical influence of the US on the "third world".
