I was going to continue buying these half speed remasters as I was so blown away by Young Americans, this sounds digital and overblown, in the same way some of the Scott 4 half speed sounded to me, I detected background crackle and distortion on the acoustic guitar intro on Starman, played my UK Ziggy 1st press straight after and it was a breath of fresh air in comparison, even with the occasional noise. I also sold my Scott 4 half speed and stuck with my original, is that a trend starting?

Edited 3 months agoSurprised to see all the bad reviews. I think this pressing sounds really good. I usually take the advice on the back "to be played at maximum volume" and experience 0% fatigue from high volumes on this one. Great dynamics, and just a kick ass album. Mine is one of the 0190296459573 JW variants, though I can't make out the other writing.

First off, my copy is DEAD QUIET the whole way through. It might be the quietest record I own. Additionally, I don't hear the boosted highs or distortion some people speak of. Zero inner groove distortion. Incredible clarity, imaging and detail without sounding fatiguing or clinical. Nice width and depth to the soundstage. Excellent instrument separation. Forget that it says it was cut from 192KHz masters. I think some people make up their minds that an LP sounds "digital" once they find out it isn't AAA. I think if the hype sticker professed that it was cut directly from the original analog master tapes a lot of those same people would be gushing over how warm and "analog" it sounds. Bowie recordings from that era tend to be bright sounding. I think this version tells the truth, but in a very musical way.

The reviews on this one are mixed. But it seems like those who gave it a good wash before playing had better luck than those who didn't do that. I don't have an ultrasonic record cleaner, but a very decent classic "professional" VPI 17. And, BTW, my turntable/audio system is embarrassingly good , so my opinion might matter ;)
I have heard this LP since I was a kid, and have had many pressings throughout the years, including copies from a Dynaflex original to a very nice sounding Japanese pressing that supposedly was made from the original plates.
I'm going to take a chance on this, and I'll report back later. Wish me luck! -
Gotta agree with apw2607 this pressing is an abomination! The highs are artificially boosted, it's full of crackles and pops and the sibilance in the vocals on some songs is downright painful. A HSM like this should be really flawless, and one should be able to listen at high volumes without fatigue. I'd much rather listen to my OG first that I've had for 50+ years or better yet, the RYKO Sound + Vision CD which sounds just flawless. And I'd much rather listen to vinyl any day but this one has just too many points against it. 👎

I absolutely hate this pressing. To my ears it sounds so so bad. All the issues described below I totally agree with. Anyway, I decided to buy the cheaper 2016 pressing and it’s significantly better. No boosted highs and no more distortion on some tracks. 2016 version sounds great.

My copy is flat and quiet, and reveals details I don't ever hearing in the recording before. Bowie gets a little shrill on the inner grooves, but otherwise I have no complaints and this seems like an incredible bargain for $25. My 70s Dynaflex pressing is still a bit warmer sounding, but not by much.

So there’s a massive difference in this record before an ultrasonic wash and after. Before the wash, it seemed ordinary and I was already looking for a first pressing online. After the wash, it was a game changer, the detailing, soundstage, warmth etc all increased so significantly that I have decided against purchasing a first pressing. It’s actually an excellent pressing!

Mine has heavy inner groove distortion. What a shame. The Highs on side can be annoying at sometimes, most notable on A3 and A4.
-
Sounds perfect. I did give it a Tergitol ultrasonic bath and a distilled water rinse before playing, so I can’t vouch for it being perfect out of the paper sleeve (why didn’t they put it in a polylined sleeve like all the other ones?), but soundstage is gorgeous and I’d personally consider this definitive.
