Edited 3 years agoAfter years of dismissing Jethro Tull as a novelty group and only ever hearing a best of and then finding 50% of their back catalogue in a charity shop I decided to dig deep and plunge in. The 70's period is definitely the best with Aqualung and Thick as a Brick living up to expectations as pure classics. This album 'Heavy Horses' certainly has its hooves planted firmly in the 70's. It's got the signature folky tinge and the obligatory complex prog rock time changes and it occasionally veers off into disco but only very briefly. There is also a lot of symphonic moments but the mix of styles works well and never goes too far into being all wrong before bouncing back to the traditional Jethro Tull sound. Anderson is not afraid to experiment with different genres as his later solo work shows but this album is pure Jethro Tull, even with the veering off because that is a part of the Tull sound.
