Edited 3 years agoI bought this almost reluctantly as 80s Bowie isn’t my favourite era. However, I’ve actually gotten a load of pleasure out of this. I’m still not a fan of Let’s Dance. It’s so flimsy that it almost blows away. The title track and China Girl are great but the rest leaves me cold. I can do without Stevie Ray Vaughans guitar wank over it all as well.
Tonight - I like it better than I did back in 1984. Bowie sounds bored throughout but there’s a few ok tracks on it. Someone should have had a quiet word before he annihilated God Only Knows.
Never Let Me Down - I actually quite like this. There’s some great pop songs buried beneath the 80s production. It took me a while to come round to it but nowadays I’ll happily play it, even going so far as tracking down the original vinyl and CD versions so I can check it out with the various edits and poor Too Dizzy. Why this was removed is anyones guess. I much prefer it to the dull Modern Love. The 2019 version is a good listen too, especially the fantastic new version of Glass Spider.
Dance isn’t bad. I like the old 80s extended 12”s where the song stays intact and there’s some great versions on this. The Tonight material in particular stands out.
Not so keen on the two live albums but Bowie live after 1978 isn’t my thing anyway. Nice documents of that time but not releases I’ll be replaying any time soon.
Finally Recall - there’s a load of great songs on this. Bowie did some ok singles in the 80s and I like the Labyrinth stuff too.
So, all in all well worth picking up. It’s surprising that out of all the boxes this one is the second to go out of print. I didn’t see that coming, unless Parlophone produced a smaller amount. It’s given me a chance to reappraise this maligned era, and I have to say I’d rather listen to anything on here than anything post …hours (Blackstar excluded).
4 stars out of 5 -
Edited 5 years agoThis set is surprisingly enjoyable considering that it falls into the commercial bowie period and the least liked 2 album period. Let's dance is a really enjoyable dance album and both weaker albums have their strong moments, i.e. Loving the alien, dancing with the big boys, Day in day out, time will crawl, Bang bang. Then we have some nice items like the 2 live albums from those tours and a strong 2 disc additional collection called Recall4 which has great songs like absolute beginners, when the wind blows and this is not america, plus some strong songs from films like when the world falls down and within you. NLMD 18 is interesting too.
