Not bad for a man suffering from writer's block, Pete Townshend takes a step back from the well-earned heights of Quadrophenia and does a more straight ahead, simple rocker. Lots of moments of excellent rock music with a couple of softer, more introspective pieces. Though I would say for the most part this album is an introspective one, with Pete looking into his and The Who's relevancy as a band. My favourite track is Blue Red and Grey, which is a pretty amusing piece to be on there considering Pete hated it and fought to not have it on the album. As he says, he was just messing around on a ukelele while recording. Turns out it's many people's favourites, including Roger Daltry's.
For my tastes, this was the last best album from The Who.
