Seems like a pretty decent package. The first 5 minutes of side 1 seem bass light, then Brown Paper Bag kicks in and you know you're listening to '97 production. Narrow sound field and grainy samples. By the end of side one it seems much better balanced, wider sound stage continues throughout the rest of the album, highly focussed sub-bass lines, brittle snares and mushy hi hats. Layers of digital distortion baked in. To modern taste the kick lacks bass punch, there's plenty going on underneath that though. More like jazz bass lines, not the teeth rattling monster bass we get now.
The packaging is very nice, quality pressing, pretty quiet background, flat/centred disks. Card inners sadly but with some interesting text and pics which make it forgivable. For once a record sleeve that you can get an inner in and out of without a fight.
Mastering is focused and makes the most of the sampler based production, it's not loud despite being split over 4 sides. Roni Size was pushing the limits of the tech at the time and making it work, in '97 this album was on point, restrained and musical. Worth a punt for a trip back in time, it certainly doesn't sound modern.
