Soul-elevating music from Peter, I'm glad this very first version released on vinyl got the 45 rpm + half-speed treatment. I got a quite silent (but not dead silent) copy, which is always a joy.
Only 2 complaints:
It's bizarre that at the end of track "The Return (Parts 1, 2 And 3)", the last track of side C, the cut of the originally gapless music flow was not perfect: we can hear the beginning of next track for a bit less than a second (on the digital version as well). Hmm.
In addition, there is a weird volume fade-out at around 05:24 of the track "Ngankarrparni (Sky Blue - Reprise)". This appears on the digital version as well, but only on this 2017 remaster version. On the original (or at least: earlier) version, there is no such fade-out and it sounds much more right. On this one, it sounds absolutely bad, I can hardly imagine it was done deliberately. -
Really reissued to put it on vinyl and pull a bit more $ out of us, 😂 The 45rpm is an interesting move for an LP production-wise; more vinyl for the sound. The original 2002 CD is still worth it to appreciate this work, IMO; better listened through in its entirety, fully immersed. The side flipping is disruptive. But the vinyl! Oh, so soft! Gotta say though that each side of the LP stands well on its own as a piece. Almost as if the CD was issued with an LP in mind. Wouldn’t put it past PG to plan that. I marvel at his talent; this is as much a soundscape as it is music. And to work in The Blind Boys of Alabama (on ‘Ngankarrparni’)?Genius. Side D the best for it, but listened all in series, that side is the culmination of the whole as each side has its own rhythm.
The film (‘Rabbit Proof Fence’) for sure worth seeing. Entirely not surreal, ironically. Heartfelt, moving, empathic. -
Edited 7 years agoPlays well straight out of the sleeves: concerns about long playing sides can be allayed as much of the music is quiet and allows many ages to be cut closer together. Very quiet in of surface noise - much better than Birdy in that respect. options are - like Birdy - 24/44.1 WAV or 16/44.1 ALAC.
