Miles Davis – In Concert

When this was first released -- around the time I bought it in 1973, there were four sides with no song titles, no personnel, and it seemed like a crazy jam. In the 90s, much more was known about Davis's music and listeners realized these were separate themes and *compositions,* Namely:
1-1 Rated X 12:16
1-2 Honky Tonk 9:18
1-3 Theme From Jack Johnson 10:12
1-4 Black Satin / The Theme 14:14
2-1 Ife 27:53
2-2 Right Off / The Theme
And knowing those compositions better and listening now, it all makes a lot more sense to me than it did in 1973. Carlos Garnett is low in the mix but he does sound right for this electric band. Side note: I wonder if future generations collecting original albums will wonder why the first record has Side 1 and 4, and the second album has side 2 and 3. It's not a mistake -- many double albums were issued this way back then because record players gave you the ability to stack several albums for play, not unlike a juke box. This would allow lazy listeners who couldn't be bothered to get up to listen to the music in the intended order. I never stacked, so I'm talking about others.

It's not mentioned anywhere, but this edition is a misprint. To play the disc in the correct order, you must first play side 1 then side 4 which is the opposite side of side 1 (like a normal disc in fact), and finish with the second disc with side 2 , and side 3 which are in reality, sides 3 and side 4. The auto-coupling announced is therefore not real but the indications on the labels are not correct.

Could anyone comment on the differences in the original UK LP mix vs. other versions of this release?

Are there any releases of this with a new mix or master than the original (that sound better)? The original is so god damn muddy. There are FM broadcast bootlegs with better sound quality than this thing.

I own two versions of this album: US KG 32092 and JP 28AP 2161 2. The Japanese version is a bit brighter and more immersive than the US version, but the muggy mix is still present. I'd say the most pronounced instrument is Michael Henderson's Bass on Ife and Right Off. Well worth the listen if you are a fan of On the Corner KC 31906.
