Automatic For The People is the eighth studio album from American alternative rock band R.E.M.,
recorded between June 1991 and July 1992 and released by John Paul Jones, Automatic For The People features ruminations on mortality, loss, mourning and nostalgia.
Upon release, it received widespread acclaim from critics, reached number two on the US Billboard 200, and yielded six singles:

Disappointed to find that my copy had a huge extra piece of yellow vinyl stuck to the record. It ended up coming off during cleaning but it damaged part of sidewinder and everybody hurts. It especially sucks because sidewinder sleeps is my favorite song on the album. Both sides also skip right at the beginning of the songs. The only thing I have to compare it to is the og cd that I had as a teenager but I think Chris Bellman did a great job on this. I don’t always love his work but the music really shines here. It was great revisiting this album for the first time in several years. Too bad there were a few annoyances that kept it from being a better experience. -

Edited 2 months agoI bought my copy through an online retailer here in Denmark in early 2025 and got this version (runouts match variant 5 above). I was a bit nervous because the original European 25th anniversary pressing got really trashing reviews, but I can't fault this version in any way. The mastering volume is a bit low to fit 24 minutes on each side, but the record is extremely quiet in spite of this. No inner grove distortion or sibilance whatsoever. The record had a lot of static from the inner sleeve (which is not as nice as the anti-static inner sleeve that came with my version of Monster), but giving it a wet clean got rid of any major dirt. The mix is very dynamic and sounds great. I guess this has always been a record that shines more courtesy of the music than the mastering, but like I said, in spite of GZ medias dodgy reputation, I'd rate this one close to perfect.

This pressing is sounding fine and silent. New out of the sleeve it had lots op paper between the grooves, had to clean it with my Humminguru. Also have the US 2016 pressing that is just a tiny bit better but has a few plops on Nightswimming....

Edited 3 months agoI think this reissue/repress sounds unbelievable. The instrumentation and vocals on Try Not to Breathe and Everybody Hurts (organ and strings) are just so well blended.

To the 720 people (at the time of writing) who have this on their wantlist - you do *not* want this pressing! While much of the album sounds like a fairly straightforward pressing from a digital master, tracks B4 and B5 are completely destroyed by oscillating pitch. I'm not talking about some mild wow/flutter that only a highly trained ear can detect - this thing wobbles up and down violently and mercilessly. Just listening to a few seconds of it is enough to make you seasick. Even if you have an extremely high tolerance for bad audio quality, this pressing will make you cry and beg for mercy. Even my dog left the room when I put this on, and he normally loves R.E.M!

Go out and get this pressing if you are a fan of this album. Sounds absolutely incredible. -
I just received my copy and it sound fantastic. I had the recent 25th anniversary edition that really disappointed me as it sounds somewhat digital in spite of being sourced from analog. I would have liked a US OG but it is out of my range.
