Notes
The debut album FACE VALUE was released on 13 February 1981 on the Atlantic in North America. The album topped the UK Album Chart on its initial release and was well-received by critics.
The idea behind the cover for the album was born out of the thought that Collins wanted to show what was going on inside his own head at the time. He felt that a close-up shot of his face would convey the emotion he was going for. Many of the songs were inspired by Collins' first divorce. Collins has stated that he never intended to make a solo record; he was simply attempting to deal with the grief after his wife left him for another man. It wasn't until he played the demo tapes for then Ahmet Ertegun that he was told the songs were good enough to be released as an album.
Other songs on the album are the up tempo Face Value.
The album also features a cover of The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows", which included instruments and vocals playing in reverse while Collins provided multi-layered background vocals and sparse drumming. After the song ends, Collins can be heard quietly singing Over the Rainbow in reference to the recent murder of John Lennon. This final song is unlisted on most releases of the album (the original US cassette version being an exception), and would be the only time Collins used a "hidden" track on one of his own releases.
Released on LP/MC 9-2-81 Reached #1 in the UK Chart

Either my bar is low, or I got a great copy of this release. Astounding sonics, good dynamics. Maybe a bit bright in places? Hearing things on this recording I didn’t know where there.

In reference to variant 3. An excellent sounding edition of this successful but seriously flawed album. What would constitute side 1 on vinyl is fantastic including the instrumental foray into a jazz/prog/gringe environment. Side 2 is awful. The drumming is, of course, amazing. -

Guys, the vinyl is clean and punchy as hell! The quality of the pressing is outstanding. If someone will ask me to show what my system is capable of, I'll drop the needle on this record. Just wow! Wtf is that -

Although I’m not a big fan of cassettes, this version sounds simply amazing. If you can get a truly NM copy, I highly recommend it. -
Average at best. My go-to versions are either the original Virgin UK CD (1983?), or the Audio Fidelity gold CD which was presumably made from the original master tapes. What AP used on this cut is a Dolby A *copy* of the master that was already sitting on their shelf, and you can tell on "In the Air Tonight" that the attack of the drums is kind of slurred compared to the other versions. (The attack of the toms during the start of the drum section is sharp and precise on these other versions.) This AP version gets three stars at most. At least my pressing is nearly perfect.

Was pleasantly surprised with this, my copy is VG+ and sounds dead quiet, virtually no noise on it. Drums sound great! -
Sounds incredible. The full record is a pleasure to listen to.
Also, my labels are on the wrong side of the record, not sure if anyone else has seen that. -
