..I also have this version of this classic, I think the sound is pretty good. No crackling, vinyl is heavy, especially & I also replace the cheap paper inner sleeves on all LPs. But something confuses me, on the back of the outer sleeve, which is also quite sturdy, it says 2009 Jackpot, Zeno records etc, on the vinyl itself, the year 2022. It's basically a night pressing of the 2009 vinyl.? Anyway, I have all the studio albums on vinyl, even if they aren't originals from that time. Whatever. Each has its own charm. The Herd LP & The Power in One LP were quite hard to get hold of. Love it. ! 🕺🏻☮️

Does everyone else’s first pressing have some random white dots throughout the cover, front and back? I even see it on the listing pictures here, just not in the same places as the ones on mine. And as well as the label, the little lines that cut off the white text? Mine has that exact same thing too. Anyone else? -
Edited one year agoMy version is actually quite good. I always replace the paper inner sleeve immediately. Wash record on arrival.
I have compared them to my wipers-bootlegt, the sound on This 2022 version is much better. Quite loud recording, yes. But no crackles. Slight background noise, absolutely flat and centered.
Unfortunately without song lyrics or insert.
For me, this version is good enough. -

The first two Wipers LP on Park Avenue label were not easily found in the UK in 1982. Funhouse records sold them on their mail-order list, and they even had the Better Off Dead 45 for 3 pounds at one point - I missed that one. The Vinyl Solution record shop in London had copies of Over The Edge LP in stock, along with the 3 Wipers 45s, in 1983 (hearing Better Off Dead for the first time just floored me - so this is how punk should have been), and some 40 years later, I still think Over The Edge is the greatest punk LP. It was the first angry punk record that really connected with me - I could get with the Wipers' existential view of the world. The more hardcore outfits were typically incoherent or musically sloppy (Husker Du took a while to get there, but Zen Arcade was the first of theirs I really liked).
In comparison, the Brit punks from 6 years earlier were just the McLaren's Monkeys' tea party - let's do/say something outrageous to get press coverage. Even my teenage brain in late 1970s could see it was all inept BS, stoked by the music press and the tabloid dailies. I felt the American punk bands that came a few years later were more intense, honest about the music, better musicians, had something to says to me, and I needed to hear some competent guitar playing as UK music scene was mostly awash in a sea of crap bands with keyboard players hoping to get a top 40 hit.
The first two Wipers LPs were reissued on Psycho label in 1984, which is when I was able hear them, and Youth In America is the other key 1980s record that I still love playing today. I like the Greg Sage and later Wipers stuff also, but Youth In America and Over The Edge are the two key early LPs.
Original pressing of Over The Edge on Brain Eater label is a lovely pressing, a really solid, thick record. I cannot comment on reissues or whether they have a better sound. Youth In America is a deeper record than Over The Edge, with more varied sound textures, but the relentless guitar blast of Over The Edge sounds just fine as it is to my ears. -
Terrible release, super noisy with a lot of crackling. Cheap plain paper inner sleeve. Master isnt awful but not great either. So i would recommend to stay clear unless its very cheap
-
Excellent pressing of a Wipers classic. “Over the edge”, “No one wants an alien”, “Doom town”, “No generation gap” are all top songs in the catalogue of a band that seamlessly fuses melody and driving, loud guitar punk, melancholy and anger. Top recommendation for both content and pressing quality.

Nice and clean pressing but not a great value. Color vinyl is an odd color choice. Etching is nice but a waste of space. Bonus material could be better. Overpriced.

Edited 3 years agoUnless you bought it at Plaidroom like I did, this is definitely not overpriced. At $35 retail (or less as I see here), I think would be a good deal (I paid $10 above that though). Quality pressing, mastered by Kevin Gray with a half LP's worth of bonus material. I'm sure they would have included a full LP's worth if they had the material, but I'll take it. I just wish there was some kind of standardized retail price on these so that record stores wouldn't use these Record Store Days to rip people off. Although, to be honest, there isn't much I do like about RSD. I'm just glad I now have all the deluxe Wipers anniversary editions so maybe I don't have to participate in this nonsense. The Wipers suck me in every time.
