Am I the only one who thinks this is not a good pressing? I mean the dynamics are perfect and all, but the volume is kinda low?
-
your local resale stores! They may have gem-quality vinyls that are irreplaceable for cheap! (found this and another ELO record when I was 18, no regrets)

Not sure if it is the songs themselves or the sonic attributes of the vinyl or the mastering but the album reminds me of sitting in the barber shop waiting for your turn. The barber has the old AM radio dialed in...and here's ELO. I'm not an ELO expert and just picked this up on a bit of a whim recently. But I'm going to say the songs are very enjoyable, Livin' Thing and Telephone obviously, and that the overall sound is plenty open and inviting but probably more warm than what I would have expected. Which doesn't bother me at all. I was expecting a little more brilliance in the high end. But, well, it's 1976 and that's OK. -
Nice sleeve, pretty darn good pressing, quiet, with the usual ELO sound, which i would call "tubey".

I love ELO, but I'm not a fan of the muffled sound on this copy. I've listened to originals, repressings and a CD from the 90's and they all exhibit this characteristic, though the original vinyl copy is the worst.. I'm told it's the sound Jeff Lynn wanted, but it's technically much worse than contemporary recordings. A shame because the music is brilliant. -

Track six consists of two songs - Livin' Thing and Above The Clouds. These were erroneously combined on this release, and Above The Clouds is not mentioned anywhere in the package.

Edited one year agoI also have OG versions Electric Light Orchestra - A New World Record (later reissue Santa Maria), but this version has the best sound out of the three, noticeable practically from the first few seconds, and then continuing. The dynamics are a little hotter, more compression, slightly less expansion, but the sound image is more discreet, clearer, "punchier." It could be able from wear on one of the other two versions, but the high notes are not distorted here, treble not distorted. It seems the elements of the mix are more discreet, each little instrument pops through out of the mix more clearly.
I might suggest, however, that this version has a more "poppy" 1970's sound, the engineering that really makes it bang. The other versions could have more "pathos," more sensitivity, a frailer sound, but not necessarily "worse."
My matrices are Re1/Re1 (variant 3). The first two variants are plates that came from Santa Maria. -
Fucking good pressing, all is so clear and it got a punch, from another planet, i luv it, get one of these
