Notes
Polar originally intended to release "Greatest Hits" in March 1976, but after import copies of "The Best Of ABBA" from central Europe were being offered to Swedish record stores, "Greatest Hits" was rush-released on 17 November, 1975.
The compilation was the biggest selling album of 1976 in the UK. "Greatest Hits" has been certified Platinum in Canada, Finland, Hong Kong, Sweden, UK and USA.
The same pool of 15 songs was used for "Greatest Hits" and "The Best Of ABBA". The original 1975 configuration of "Greatest Hits" includes 14 tracks, many later editions also include "Fernando". Some releases omit less well known tracks like "He Is Your Brother" and "Another Town, Another Train". North American versions omit "Hasta Mañana".
Two main cover art versions exist. The original, used in Europe (except UK) and most of South America, features the 'glam monsters' painting by Hans Arnold. Much more common though (in number of copies sold) is the cover using the 'autumn couples' photos (which also appear inside some of the 'glam monsters' gatefold sleeves), used in the UK and North America.
Cover art exceptions:
– in Brazil, the compilation reused the title and artwork of the "ABBA" album (which wasn't released in Brazil)
– Belgium and used the 'oriental animals dresses' photo (and also jumbled the track list)
– Portugal release (titled "Fernando") features the 'campfire' photo, from the "Greatest Hits Vol. 2")
– Singapore/Malaysia/Hong Kong LP features the 'hats' photo from the "Dancing Queen" single sleeve (but doesn't include "Dancing Queen")

The reason you- some of you dislike it ( the artwork) is the reason for me to buy it. Hans Arnold who did the illustration have this ”soft horror” style as his trademark. Endless of children’s books and much more is known to every Swede over 50years. When he first come from Austria after the war he rented a room at my grandmothers apartment. I got one of his first paintings- in a completely different style. As a record collector and a Swede I buy the original press of all ABBA’s regular releases- but I don’t pay much and it must be in top condition. ( my main purchases was 808 state & 2 early Clash singels. ) For your information..Merry Christmas!

Edited one year agoThe only good thing about this release is the groovy artwork. The actual pressing itself is absolutely horrendous. Everything is hidden behind a wall of mud - ill-defined bass and drums, zero midrange, and reversed channels on SOS. Just awful. ABBA clearly never got the ‘mastering’ memo. 😳

Edited one year agoInteresting mastering on this edition - Monarch are renowned for doing their own record mastering, and it’s evident on this release. There is a lot more bass on this pressing, than can be found on other foreign compilation or studio albums ( though it is a little too compressed). Lacquer cut at a very low volume due to album length. The iconic artwork used for the U.S. release looks fantastic. Recommended if you’re looking for a ‘meatier-sounding’ pressing.

This one was another from my aunt's collection from when i was a kid. Every song on here is great. Their most essential album.

fabulous pressing!!!
highly recommended. present vocals, velvety high frequencies, and powerful bass. a lot of dynamics here gentlemen
Really very surprised by the audio quality of this edition, for which I paid only $6 -
wow. quite expensive in the marketplace. im guessing these were pressed in small numbers in the 70s?

Greatest Hits - ABBA
————————————
ABBA are a Swedish pop group formed in Stockholm in 1972 by Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The group's name is an acronym of the first letters of their first names. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, topping the charts worldwide from 1974 to 1983.

Greatest Hits is a compilation album by the Swedish pop group ABBA. It was originally released in Scandinavia on 17 November 1975 and in other parts of the world in 1976, notably the UK on 10 April, and on 18 September in the US and Canada. The 1976 version of the album contained the brand new single "Fernando".

In my opinion, ABBA is the best Swedish pop band of all time and their songs are some of the best from the 70s pop era. This particular album collects their best songs from 1970-75 and is an overall amazing album. The amount of great hits on this album alone makes it worth the cost of buying it, my personal favourites are "Honey, Honey", "Waterloo" and "SOS". The reason I don't give this album a 9 is because of the film Mamma Mia, even though it bought the band more fame than they already had, it also makes it so that when you play a song by ABBA, it is more often than not someone will say "oh, thats the song from Mamma Mia" and won't actually know the band. Other than this, this album's music evokes a sense of nostalgia for many people as a lot of people's parent's listened to it or you may it from your childhood. And this is the reason that this album is the best ABBA album to get if you are just getting started, it represents the best of ABBA's early years and is a must for any record collection.
