I have some serious issues with the mastering on side A, the bass is literally all over the place. You’d need some big subs to hear (and see) but this probably the least consistent mastering of any album I’ve heard.
Unbelievable gap in quality the tracks.
My side B which has the lowest stamp I’ve seen is actually really good quality. This is nuts! This was clearly a rush job. I wonder if side A stamper was knackered and they made a new one for B and just left it. Fire sounds supper compressed.

No purple haze and The wind Cries Mary on this the usual UK disgrace. and Red House are not on US version. The worst was the omission of A Whiter Shade of Pale on 1st Procol Harum album

Not the best sounding one out there, a bit flat and sort of shrilly sounding, though it still sounds great when played loud... IF you can find one that's not beat to hell. I prefer my Japanese Polydor mono over this one, and I can't say it enough to avoid the 2013 reissue that sounds like the tape was drenched in water. I still can't believe Bernie would do something like that mess.

I actually really enjoy listening to this first pressing (mono). Having grown up listening to a 1990s Stereo CD edition, this sounds quite stripped back and raw to me. It has more of a Garage Rock, embryonic sound. As others have said, it is a bit flat and you can't really blast it, but there is less reverb and you can pick out the instruments better. A really interesting listen and has reignited my interest in this album.

I own this exact UK first pressing, the US first pressing (stereo) and have been able to compare these two against a friend's UHQR which is based on the US version.

In 95% of cases, my experience is that the first pressing from the country of origin is the best sounding, as it is based on the freshest source material.
In this case, unfortunately, that is not so. The UK version sounds SO hollow, puffy and flat that it's not fun to listen to at all.
For the US version, the studio material has been subsequently mixed down to stereo. They put in some totally crazy effects, like sometimes the voice comes out of one speaker - and the guitar out of another. Ew! The songs that are not so crazy sound very good.
This is where the UHQR comes in: it sounds, from the character of its tonal balance, very similar to the US version - just a bit better in everything. A bit cleaner (although "dirty" is also kind of cool for this music), better spatiality and has a bit more punch.

All in all, I can't recommend this UK copy. I'm only keeping mine for collector reasons.

This all was heard on a high-quality system in a room that was prepared by a graduate physicist. Hope that helps someone to not burn their money.

How many of these 1970’s US reissues do you think are inaccurately dated based off of a mismatched inner sleeve

my white inner sleeve has a "Made in England 097" instead of a "Made in England 057". the other text imprint matches the one described here.
