Bruce Springsteen popped up for the first time on in New Jersey at the beginning of the 1970s. Accompanied by his dashing E Street Band, he initially sounded like a cross between Bob Dylan and the early Tom Waits. The strengthening of his sound delivered the masterpiece Born To Run (1975), which received rave reviews because of the Phil Spector-like grandeur and raw lyrics. Nine years later, Springsteen broke with the pumped-up stadium rock sound of Born In The U.S.A. around the world. In the meantime, he also wrote excellent acoustic albums like Nebraska and The Ghost Of Tom Joad. Springsteen, who grew up in a working-class family, never forgot his background. His album The Rising from 2002 is considered one of the most beautiful musical responses to 9/11. In 2006, Springsteens career back a striking turn. On We Shall Overcome, he played rough folk songs, written or announced by the American folkartiest Pete Seeger.
