A monster album and truly one that changed music. Jean Michel Jarre's third album Oxygene (1976) thrust instrumental electronic music into the mainstream. As a genre it had been gaining momentum thanks to other artists like Vangelis, but the release of the single Oxygene (Part IV) was where it landed. The importance of these early albums can't be understated. They lay the foundations for so much that was to follow and you can track a clear line from Oxygene through to Daft Punk today. TOP TIP. Check out 'Magic Fly' by Space from 1977 for an early example of a dance beat applied to electronic music.

What makes these early electronic albums even more remarkable is that they were recorded and arranged a long time before convenient recording technologies were developed, but the artists behind them were key players in their development.

Oxygene is one of those 'must have' historic albums and stands up perfectly today. It doesn't sound dated - and indeed it never could. And as for that sleeve! What a classic. It's up there with Tubular Bells and Dark Side of the Moon as iconic.
