I'll never adhere to the initial baggage many fans and critics saddled on this release. Is it my favorite Orb? Not by any means but it still delivers in plentiful Orb-sustenance along the way. Total running time is a bit over 70 minutes -- 3-4 minutes of editing could have honed it a bit and perhaps Once More could have been left exclusively for the 12" single. It doesn't diminish for me the grandeur of Terminus, Mile Lump of Lard, Hamlet of Kings, Plum Island and most of the rest which transport the listener to a technicolor Wizard of Orb playland that really never happened again after this album -- and I'm a big fan of a lot of the later releases but they don't have the same fairy story footing the band lived in through the 90s. -
Great pressing! Sounds more balanced in the layers to my ears than the CD does. Still a lot to digest all these years later... very enjoyable. -
Proper vintage Orb music combined with - for the first time - some distinctive vocal tracks that features Aki Omori and Nina Walsh, later known as a musical companion of Andrew Weatherall.
However this album did not received that many great reviews at the time, this one turns out to be a timeless classic Orb album with vibrant bass lines, flutes, heayy beats and funny but powerfull samples !
To quote NME: "A museum piece for old ravers to treasure" but definitely not "for the rest to ignore".
Why? Here are some reasons:
Enjoy rolling echoes in the music that build up around Nina Walsh hypnotic voice in dubby atmospheres. Trippy results that reminds a bit of One Dove with Ghostdancing and Plum Island.
Chill out with spaced-out ambient dub tracks in classic Orb style like Hamlet of Kings and Terminus. Music as you grow fond of with The Orb from the start.
