I'm not the world's greatest Moby fan to be sure, but this long drone piece is a quite fantastic work. It never deviates in quality, it sustains interest throughout. Voices and instruments drop in and out, never going over the top... and it never seems to be working towards anything as cheesy as a climax or any type of resolution. Even classical composers could learn something from this. I like to play it 'repeat' for several hours to get the most from it. If you play it long enough it becomes part of the room and without wishing too sound too 'pseuds corner' it becomes part of yourself.

Not at all like later commercial-ized Moby releases, Alt.Quiet.Version is an unsettling listen. It isn't particularly ambient (as in background music, or as some pastoral techno term) but rather isolationist. Bits of melody appear in snatches, but mostly what you get is washes of sound; strange listening indeed, but there is much to be mined here. Too bad Moby neglected to follow this less-beaten path ...
