Edited 6 years agoSummer of 1990. In a Brooklyn basement Codeine record their debut album. From that basement a desolate, disillusioned, jaded music comes out. It takes your breath away as summer sultriness, it isolates and envelops you as autumn fog, it hypnotizes you as the lights of a metropolis watched through a car window running on a wet road. Intimate and hypnotic, it slides slowly into the void of a loneliness without alternatives. A noise rock with delicate dissonant arpeggios, rhythmic strokes in slow motion and enveloping glimpses of distortion. Nihilistic and tired, Frigid Stars is an abyss towards which the listener is fatally drawn to. Sometimes it sounds intimate, sometimes epic. Never too emphatic. Existential and cathartic, in its simplicity Frigid Stars is original and unique as certain albums by Neil Young and Nick Drake. And also a source of inspiration for all post rock and slowcore bands - from Low to Mogwai, from Bark Psychosis to Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
