Man From Solaris is an exercise in the kind of deep driving euphoric house that barely exists anymore. There is so much going on emotionally in that track. Timeless masterpiece.

Edited 13 years agoBack when this record was released the response was rather lukewarm. I felt that it was unjustified and still do. 'Different' may lack the excitement and wildness of Mr. Hulkkonen's first two albums but it has great musical experiences and it's a quality record overall. 'Different' isn't just full of tech house or dance floor tunes. The records kicks off with trip-hoppy 'We Are The Rising Sun' which is a nice mellow way the start the record. After that you get more house oriented with 'You're My Excuse For Being Me' which is with its Finnish spoken intro, strings and deep tech beats a trademark Jori Hulkkonen production. The true high point of the album is 'Man From Solaris' which was originally released earlier on F-Comm promo single one year earlier or so. I do not dare to say that it would be my all time favorite Jori song but it's one of his best. I'm not sure if such genre as tech-house exists anymore, but if some one would like to hear my all time favorite from that genre, it would be 'Man From Solaris', period. There are other quality house or tech house oriented tunes such as 'Miniaturized', 'Abstract Living', and 'Latin Taiga' which have their own contribution to this album. The slow burning, almost down-tempo 'All I See Is Shadows' isn't that bad or great, but certainly not a good choice as a single.
The real problem with this album is the last tune 'Blue And White' which was, if I correctly, inspired by the Finnish national ice hockey team. Now, if you have an album you want that it leaves a good taste in your mouth but in that sense 'Blue And White' in a complete failure. It's a sore loser as far the whole record is concerned, and maybe somewhere in the middle you could forget it, but since it's the last song it just stands out in a bad way. I suppose we can always blame Tiga.
Overall 'Different' is a great record with a variation of great tunes on it. Just don't expect it to be a sequel to to 'Selkäsaari Tracks' or 'The Spirits Inside Me'.
