The ongoing exploration of older synthesizer-based music has led more folks back to Craig Leon. Nommos, recently available again through a bootleg, is an excellent place to start exploring his work. It was a title I was always on the lookout for when digging around in thrift shops. A few years back, I found Leon's 1982 release Visiting instead and it is a gem for those who like to space out to synthesizers and drum machines. One Hundred Steps sounds fresh and develops a tribal vibe about 2 minutes in, extending and overlaying synths on top of a lilting rhythm. Region of Fleeing Civilians is upbeat with a straight up dancey feel and brighter, layered synths. Three Small Coins dives deep with its dark and reverberating tones. Visiting returns to astral and tribal territory, organic instrumentation riding alongside synths. Leon builds a lovely soundscape at a unhurried pace pushed along by shuffling beats. Details Suggest Fidelity to Fact focuses on a ghostly chorus with an urgent pace. The final track, The Customs of the Age Disturbed is a beatless synth soundscape - an ambient beauty.
