Great album. Great band. Totally recommend getting this album if you don’t already have it. Nile Rodger’s played in New Zealand back in 2017. I saw him just earlier that year in Australia. Both shows were some of my favorite shows. Lionel Ritchie was on the bill too. Was absolutely outstanding.
Favorite song: Dance, Dance, Dance. -
This album has so much rhythm. Rhythm drum, rhythm guitar, rhythm keys. The bass is the only instrument taking the lead. This has to be one of the best funk albums of all time. All you want to do is get up and dance in your living room. Repetitive rhythms that you could almost have on a loop all day. Big note to show is the mixing of this album. Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers would use this super old school compressor on their albums. This is what gives the album the pop on each beat. It's the draw in to dance. Even though musically, Chic are tight, this is a big part of their sound. It's funny seeing this sound being brought back into popularity in recent years. Bruno Mars has used it on many different occasions and we also have the likes of Jack Stratton building the "Vulf Compressor". Even though their tunes are repetitive, it doesn't get boring to the ears. A very similar effect that the modern Vaporwave/Chillwave has. Funny I mention that link as a lot of that style takes samples of classic Disco/Funk. The only exception to this repainting is "At Last I Am Free". That really does just go on and on and on. If it were a faster rhythm they may have got away with it but this is only miner criticism. Of course, it wouldn't be a Chic album if Rodger's guitar playing wasn't heard. He plays his way from the start to the finish and that's how I want it. Just as we come to the end we hear "Just one more thing. the whole world's a circus, don't you be the clown". I couldn't put it better myself.
