Edited 4 years agoThis style.. hip hop/metal fusion, related to 'nu-metal' - is well and truly out of fashion now. However, in the peak times for this genre, around the 2000s, this was wildly popular.. and groups like Public Enemy, Run DMC, Cypress Hill, KoRn, yes even Limp Bizkit, System of Down.. had much success and glory with their 'alt. rock with rap' crossbreed. Whatever you may think about that now, I'm a huge fan of RATM. Their political anger could not be more appropriate in these difficult times, with civil liberties in America being a hot topic.
Even though the recording quality has lost some clarity over today's glossy productions, this is everything in my opinion that punk rock/alt rock/metal should be - political, angry, all about the lyrics, distortion pedal to the max, mosh pits, all that stuff. RATM provide a rather funk-based take on the rap/metal/nu-metal genre and the bass is a key component of every song.
I've heard many people talk about the problem with the current disenfranchised generation is that they are not angry enough about the position they are in. Well if that's true, maybe they should listen to some more RATM? This is the fourth and last real RATM album, and also possibly the weakest, but still is in a different league compared to many other bands of the time.
