Edited 3 years agoI can confirm the original is better than the VS re-issues in all aspects. It appears louder and clearer, with more depth and detail. The re-issues just sound two-dimensional by comparison. I'm beginning to doubt the re-issues are true analog transfers. The sleeve print quality of the original is superior, the front photograph showing more information unlike the re-issues whose image is noticeably cropped and slightly blurry, small photographs on the back also appearing to be better reproductions. -
Lynch's and Badalamenti's first outing together. The score is a love letter to Bernard Hermann and Vangelis. The remaining vocal pieces use saccharine 1950s pop to really turn up the dread. The remaining piece "Mysteries of Love" with vocals by Julee Cruise make you feel as if everything is better now, even if you understood nothing about what went on. -
just bought a used copy, original us varese sarabande with lyric insert :) this is the version to get, sounds much better than the VS re-issues and the newer fire records re-issues. my copy was flat and quiet.

My copy was still sealed but no insert in it : only a plastic sleeve.
Is it certain that there were an insert in that version ? -

I assume this will get the reissue treatment sooner than later. However, the Varèse Sarabande version sounds wonderful and is worth searching down for a good price. This was Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch's first collaboration together and still one of their strongest. Certainly set forth the mood they would continue on with Twin Peaks and beyond. Highly recommended.
