Desertshore
The Desertshore project is a 're-imagined' cover version of Nico’s seminal 1970 album first conceived by the late Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson in Berlin 2006. In 2010 at his home in Bangkok, he refocussed his approach readying to record guest vocalists while Chris and Cosey prepared material in their UK studio for his return there in December. Sadly, Sleazy unexpectedly died in his sleep on the 25th November in Bangkok.

Chris and Cosey made a commitment to Sleazy to complete the ‘Desertshore’ project picking up from where they left off just prior to his untimely ing. With enthusiastic and contributions from so many who were close to Sleazy, especially the guest artistes whose work he ired; Antony, Marc Almond, Blixa Bargeld, Sasha Grey and Gaspar Noé, the project is now complete.

Chris and Cosey complain about rights to official releases etc. What gives them the right to assert this as the 'Final Report', without GPO?!

This is such a spectacular album and the vinyl just pops so lovely. Beautiful and haunting. The falconer is incredible.

The bass on the vinyl really pops nicely

A complete cover of a Nico album conceived by Sleazy (and to a lesser extent Genesis) one of his favourite albums, recorded by all four TG in front of invited audiences at the ICA gallery. That album was never released. The entire sessions however were released, followed by a TG album called Third Mind Movements, made up of improvisations during the Desertshore sessions but not mentioned on the sleeve. Genesis then quits TG and Desertshore is repurposed and re-recorded as a Guest Vocalist album by the three piece ‘X-TG’. Sleazy sadly es away and the album is now completed by Chris and Cosey and finally issued as a sort of Sleazy tribute album. Quite a long and convoluted 5 year journey for an album and in my opinion it suffers for it. ‘The Final Report’ often feels like an unspontaneous and overproduced collection of post Genesis jams. The real Final Report would be The Third Mind Movements. XTG unfortunately just not much more than a contractual footnote. More X-TG studio/live recordings have been long promised but have never materialised.

Ok, have only listened once but this isn't a cover version, it really is a total re-imagining; not even the track order is the same. Le Petit Chevalier, which I think was originally sung by Nico's young son, is now terrifying and, frankly, fabulous! God knows the result had Genesis been involved! Oddly, I'm least sure about the Antony vocal. (Re vinyl, it's fine; not sure it captures anything the CD wouldn't given it's presumably a digital recording, but, you know, vinyl).
